Reader Request: Long Over Lean for Summer

long over lean for summer

Emily e-mailed me this question:

I’m fairly new (2 years) to this whole style thing and I’m encountering a problem. The long and lean look looks great on me (I’m 5’3 and a size 20ish) but I can’t figure out how to do it in the summer. I’d love your help with how to do this so I can be stylish and comfortable this summer.

The long over lean dressing formula can feel a little covered-up for hot weather, but it is possible to make this look work for summer! Here are some ideas:

Short-sleeved or sleeveless tunic, slim bottom, open footwear

sleeveless tunic and legggings

How could I NOT post this outfit, in light of our look at military dressing influences earlier this week? The moto vest may hint at my hidden desire to join the Hell’s Angels, but the olive green shirt and camo-print scarf are all army. Eeesh. Kinda hilarious, really. I am terrified of motorcycles and get winded after running for a block. No biker gang or armed force in their right mind would ever take me. Then again, I adore my tulle skirt and would make any actual ballerina choke on her own laughter with my dance moves. read more

Dressed for: A Pretty Pile of Baubles

Already Pretty outfit featuring navy blazer, plaid shirt, statement necklace, skinny jeans, Frye Vera Slouch boots, J.W. Hulme bag

Shirt – thrifted – similar
Jeans – courtesy Karen Kane
Boots – Frye Vera Slouch
Necklaces – H&M, Ideeli, and Target
Bag – J.W. Hulme

It’s been a while since I did a necklace pile, but once I got going with this outfit it was hard to stop. Everything else felt marvelously tomboyish, so gobs of rhinestones created the perfect balance. I wore this for a cozy girls’ night in chatting with a dear friend. read more
