Reader Request: Boot Height and Leg Flattery

How boot height impacts figure flattery

Laura popped this question into a comment:

I’m also fascinated by the too-tall boots example you gave in a recent post. If you’ve already written about boot height and proportions, would you point me toward that piece, and if not, would you do a post all about boot height? I suspect I may have the same problem with some tall boots in my closet… This would be great information to have before fall!

Many of you followed up by throwing similar requests into the suggestion box. So here we go! read more

Crop Tops: Surprisingly Versatile

crop tops with skirts

one | two | three

I steered well clear of the crop tops during the 90s. They scared the living daylights out of me, since they were worn with low-rise jeans and therefore would’ve exposed the entirety of my middle-jiggle. When they came back around again I was initially skeptical, but people were styling them so differently that I converted fairly quickly: Nowadays you’re more likely to see a crop top worn with high-rise pants/jeans or a high-rise skirt. Much less torso is exposed. In fact sometimes you can’t see any torso at all and it’s just the short-top-longer-bottom proportions that become the outfit’s focus. A whole different ballgame. read more

Reader Request: Long Over Lean for Petites

Fabulous reader Emily – who I was lucky enough to meet and chat with when I was in New York last summer – e-mailed me a while back asking about making the long-over-lean formula work on a petite frame.

Lately, all I want to wear are leggings and longer things on top – which I realized is: Sally’s Long-Over-Lean formula. Thing is: I own 1 pair of ponte pants, 1 pair of cheap leggings, and 1 pair of sort-of-skinny jeans. I’m 4′ 11″ as you might remember. I carry my weight in the belly. Literally in the belly, as in, could be 5 months pregnant all the time (I ain’t). Clearly if I want to make this happen as My Look, I need more leggings. And more long swinging / pooch-hiding sweaters. BUT!!!!! (Here’s my question): DO I want to make this happen as My Look? I’m short. If I wear a long sweater on top, I think I go 50%-50% in terms of body division. Not the Golden Mean by any stretch. read more
