Reader Request: International Shopping Resources

Reader Megan e-mailed me this request:

As an international reader (from Sydney, Aus!), I was thinking it’d be great if you could write up your favourite online shopping stores that are reliable, do free or inexpensive international shipping, have decent returns policies and sell some of the gorgeous brands you are fond of.

So I’ll tell you right now that I did as much digging as I could and input as much info as I could at these sites, but since I don’t have valid mailing addresses for most locales I couldn’t follow through to confirm that shipping costs were totally accurate right down to clicking, “Buy.” If you attempt to purchase from any of these retailers and find my research to be wrong, PLEASE stop back and let me know. I can edit the post to be as accurate as possible! read more

Reader Request: Shopping for Figure-challenging Garments

how to shop for hard to fit clothes

Jess popped this question into the suggestion box:

I don’t know quite how to phrase this, but I’d love a post on how to shop for those items that make you feel insecure. For example, I’m mostly a wearer of skirts and dresses, but I want to incorporate more trousers into my wardrobe. However, while I’m familiar and comfortable enough with my body in skirts and dresses to make shopping for those items straightforward and pain-free, shopping for trousers fills me with angst because it highlights those parts of my body I haven’t quite got to grips with (my thighs, mostly, which are the reason why I find it hard to get trousers to fit), and also because I find the sizing (with waist measurements and hip measurements and leg measurements and all of that) confusing. As a result, I tend to either get upset or give up very easily. But I want to overcome this, not least because my Dream Jeans are on their way out and I can’t find any more of the same brand and I want to be able to find some replacements! read more

Reader Request: How Much Should You Invest in Your Wardrobe?

How much should you spend on your wardrobe?

Readers Lynn and Ruby asked:

Lynn: How much spending on clothes is appropriate? I think it certainly depends on one’s budget and income, but what about conscience? I spend somewhere between $150 and $200 a month, I feel guilty as my son and husband spend close to nothing on their clothes. My income is high, I can easily afford $150 a month, but I still feel that this is almost too much.

Ruby: I agree – I’d love to know your thoughts on an appropriate clothing budget as a percentage of your income, for example. If you make $25K, how much should you reserve for clothes/shoes/accessories? $50K? $100K? How should that change if you’re in a professional job and need to wear suits (as I am), or if you wear scrubs, etc. to work every day? I know I’m spending far too little on my wardrobe, but I have no idea how much I should be spending. read more
