Reader Request: Incorporating Colorful Shoes

How to wear colorful shoes

An anonymous commenter said:

I’d be thrilled if you could talk about how you choose shoe styles and shoe colors to go with the rest of the outfit. I only recently become bold enough to buy shoes that weren’t black and by not black, I mean brown, gray, and beige/cream. I’m very unsure about how to approach colors as well as styles. Like how do you determine whether a pair of shoes goes with a skirt/dress, pants, or both?

Oooh, fun, fun, fun! I’m a huge fan of bright footwear and believe that there are many reasons to move beyond black shoes and embrace vibrant tones. For starters, colorful shoes are fantastic way to wear colors that don’t play nicely with your complexion; Yellow sweaters may make you look ill, but yellow shoes will just make you look bold. Colorful shoes allow you to wear conservative clothing, but still let your quirky side peek through. Bright shoes are a fabulous way to incorporate more color variety into your wardrobe and daily wear. And besides all that, they’re just plain fun. Times three. As indicated by my semi-coherent introductory sentence. read more

Shoe Basics

Shoe styles that (almost!) every woman should consider adding to her wardrobe

When I worked as a stylist, I was always puzzled when I visited a client with a wardrobe full of lovely, current, perfectly-fitting clothing and a tiny mound of outdated, weather-beaten, unloved shoes that in no way align with their owner’s style. To me, appropriate, interesting shoes are an integral part of an overall look and I believe that knowing your preferred shoe types is absolutely essential to building personal style.

But not everyone feels that way. Despite the stereotypes about women and shoes, I think that many of us struggle to track down styles that suit our tastes AND lifestyles. Shoes get worn harder than clothing in most cases, and that makes buying them far trickier. A dress has to work with body shape … but shoes have to be comfortable, affordable, stylish, AND work perfectly with a multitude of outfits under a multitude of circumstances. So cultivating a lasting, useful, beautiful collection of shoes can be quite a project, and some women would rather focus on objects of style that require less versatility and research. read more

Reader Request: Building Accessory Collections

How to build your accessory collection like a real fashionista!

Long, long ago, mamaspeak popped this request into the suggestion box:

I would love to see some posts about building shoe and jewelry collections. I’ve gone through the relevant tags that you have and got some great ideas, but I’m starting from very bare-bones and am nervous about buying more shoes/necklaces/etc. that look nice in the store, but don’t seem to match anything, are actually uncomfortable-in-disguise, get very little use, etc. It would be nice to see something about basic items that are good base pieces … read more
