The Importance of a Full-length Mirror

There are a few things that came up time and again when I worked with style consult clients. Shirt length was one of them. Closet orphans were another. But the one that consistently surprised me? So many of these stylish, enthusiastic, creative women who are keen to transform their sartorial lives lack one of the most important tools in a stylish woman’s arsenal: A full-length mirror.

Most of them have mirrors in their bathrooms or atop their dressers that show everything from the hips upward. Some undergo potentially dangerous contortions to perch on the bathtub edge. Some check the top half and then clamber onto the bed for the bottom view. read more

There are magazine columns, websites, and television shows built around the practice of examining fashion choices and making fun of them. They focus mainly on celebrities, but regular people get caught in the crossfire, too, occasionally. And while constructive criticism is an important tool for learning, most of these people and outlets aren’t interested in teaching style lessons.* They’re interested in generating clicks and gaining viewership by tearing down people who aren’t present to explain their choices or join the discussion. And at this point, judging others for their clothing choices has become such a commonplace activity that it seldom registers as anything other than normal. How to Do Long Over Lean

I’ve begun updating some of my greatest hits posts so they’re more current. This is one of them!

Even with my style shift, once the weather gets warm, I’m all about dresses. Typically dresses with knee-length or shorter hems, nipped waists, and full or A-line skirts. That silhouette feels perfect for spring and summer. Ya know, a little something like this:
