Reader Request: New Job Style

dressing for a new job

Kate e-mailed me with this question:

In about three weeks, I’ll be starting a new job, and while my brain is busy getting ready for the new challenges that go along with it, one little part of my brain is wondering “What am I going to wear?”  I ask because I’ve been in my current job for about four years. When I started, I was in my mid-20s, straight out of grad school and I dressed quite conservatively: mostly suit separates with button downs and sweaters and blazers, in an attempt to look a little older and wiser amongst my older coworkers.  As I started getting more comfortable and confident in my job and my work, I started to dress more to show my personality.  I’m by no means outlandish and I still dress within the business casual dress code but now I find myself wearing more brightly colored clothing and I take a few more fashion risks.  READ MORE

Reader Request: Style Maturation and Individuality

mature style

K emailed me this question:

At least for me (I guess all of us dealing with the time continuum), we are all getting older so many of the style shifts coincide with wondering if what I need now is a more mature style, but not wanting to lose the youth we still still feel, no matter our age, but wanting to dress appropriately for our bodies, career positions, and body size and shape in a kind, gentle way. Sometimes I feel this fear that I can’t identify about my shifting style-wanting to hold on to the old me yet let it go, and worry that I won’t get it back when the unknown new style is an unknown thing. Then I just throw on some jeans and a cardigan (my default) and I’m OK. However, after a stint in a more formal work environment I find myself wanting a blazer instead of a cardigan…I somehow feel older (jaded?) in a way I wasn’t expecting that makes me both sad and happy. Reader Request: Dressing Professionally for the Petite Busty Frame

Kay popped this question into the suggestion box:

How would you professionally dress a busty (we are talking more than DD here) short (5 foot!), curvy woman with hourglass shape? (As in thigh proportionate to the bust.) And no, wearing heels is not an option.

I since I’m neither petite nor busty myself, I asked stylist and blogger extraordinaire Imogen Lamport of Inside Out Style to help me out. And boy, did she deliver! Kay didn’t give us tons of detail, so these recommendations assume that goals include ensembles that will work in a relatively conservative work environment, figure balance, and downplaying the bust at least somewhat. Read on for Imogen’s ideas. READ MORE
