Insomniac Sale Picks SPECIAL EDITION: Opaque White Tee Shirts

*In this late-night feature – which will run on Tuesday and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

best white tee shirt

So tonight’s picks are not necessarily on sale, and I won’t be gathering extra resources at the end because the request is SO common and SO difficult to fulfill! These are shirts I know from personal (and client) experience are actually opaque. (And I ordered at least 8 white tees from sustainable companies over the course of the summer and returned all but one for being translucent. So I’ve done my due diligence!)

opaque white t shirt

Fair Indigo Fair Trade Scoop Neck Tee – $32.90

I’m THRILLED to be able to put a sustainable option front and center tonight! This tee is one of the only ones that passed my opacity tests – it’s thick and sturdy enough to be worn alone with a nude bra and reveal virtually nothing. Wear it with a black or white bra and you won’t be as thrilled, as it’s still a fairly lightweight cotton … but so long as you have a nude-to-you option, you’re golden. This tee is also slightly shaped without being clingy and has a versatile scoop neckline. A big win all around. Available in sizes XS – XL – I’m a size 8-10 on top, and ordered a large, which fits well … so I’d say this tee runs a bit small. Also available in black, yellow, coral, blush, lilac gray, and teal/white stripes.

thick white tee shirt

Talbots Platinum Jersey Top – was $49.50, now $44.99

The Talbots Platinum Jersey line is a great one to investigate for opaque whites, with one caveat – tops are double-layered IN FRONT which gives them a great drape and reliable opacity. I believe that most have a single layer in back, so won’t be as thick and could be slightly more translucent. Again, with a nude bra you should be in good shape and, of course, this tee will work beautifully layered with cardigans and jackets. But depending on your needs and requirements, it might not be the perfect stand-alone white tee. That said, it comes in regular, petite, plus, and petite plus sizes – so a win for size diversity! Talbots sizing runs true to slightly large.

baby rib tee shirt

Bella + Canvas Ladies Rib Tee – $0.80 – $25.99

Yep, this is basically a baby tee. (If you weren’t fully conscious in the 90s that may be meaningless to you, but you Gen Xers and Gen Yers will know what I mean.) Most mass-produced tee shirts are made from jersey knits that are thin and relatively sheer. An easy way to achieve that covetable non-see-through look is to pick a thicker weave. Baby rib does the trick, and Bella + Canvas is a great, affordable brand. Runs small though, so size up by at least one if not two sizes. Available in sizes S – XXL, though white is sold out in some larger sizes. (This style available in 44 colors!) If you prefer a domestically made/sustainable baby rib, American Apparel has several styles in this knit, too, which also run quite small.

non see through white shirt

Land’s End Shaped Cotton Crew-neck – was $15.50, now $11.63
with code TAKE25, pin 1975

This tee is the wild card tonight – I will admit I’ve not tried the style personally. But it is a rib knit like the Bella version above, and that gives it a fighting chance of being opaque enough to wear alone with a nude bra! I’m including it because of the fantastic price point, and because it’s available in regular, plus, petite, and tall sizes. Also comes in black or navy. Land’s End sizing runs true to slightly large.

I’m a fan of Everlane’s Cotton V-neck; they’re sustainable as well, did you try it out? I did have to size up though and their size range is fairly narrow. I’m a 0-2 on top and prefer the size Small tee (I usually wear XS in Everlane, often XXS in J.Crew or Anthro), which I can happily wear with a lacy nude bra.

    • I tried a couple of Everlane styles and they were all too sheer for my taste, but don’t think I got the v-neck. Glad it worked for you – thanks for mentioning it!

Oh that’s true, many of their boxier styles are made of a much thinner fabric. For opacity I would ONLY recommend the cotton V.

It’s been a few years since I bought them (they last that long), but when I did, Eddie Bauer’s Favorite tees were completely opaque in white.

Excellent. I think I’ll look at getting your Fair Indigo recommendation. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for this list! How about some recs for comfortable, durable, non-see-through white camis? (ie: ones that look nice when they’re peeking out from a V-neck dress or top at work).

I’d also love to see recommendations for supportive sleep camis (like the kind with shelf bras) for larger busts.

    • Ooh, I’ll try, amk, but won’t be able to vouch for them personally! Anyone else have suggestions to share for opaque white camis?

Long Tall Sally’s basic t-shirt (both long and short sleeved) is also quite thick, and frequently on sale.

I bought some tees from Boden and they are nice and opaque. I got the essential short sleeve scoop (though I also got a tank and a long sleeve tee in the same fabric) It’s on clearance now, though sizes are very limited. http://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/clearance/womens-tops-t-shirts/short-sleeved-tops/wl899-wht/womens-white-essential-short-sleeve-scoop
