Insomniac Sale Picks: Obi Belts

by Sally on March 19, 2013 · 12 comments

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Ellen requested a few picks for obi belts, so here we go:

stunning soft black genuine leather waist

Leather Waist Wide Long Belt – was $59.99, now $39.99

Basic black leather at a great price. Completely free of embellishments and hardware, it’s a simple wrap with extra long ties. This belt is 96 inches long, and should fit waist sizes from 24-36 inches. (That’s the vendor estimate. Could go longer depending on how you wrap it.)

luxury lane women's faux leather stretch obi belt

Luxury Lane Faux Leather Stretch Belt – was $35, now $19.99

Less of a traditional obi, but still featuring that wide, tapered oval shape in front this faux leather option isn’t a true wrap. It features an elastic panel in back with a snap closure, which some folks might find more comfortable than several layers of leather. Available in size S/M.

eloquii obi belt women's plus size

eloquii Obi Belt – was $35, now $21

If you’re looking for something a little lighter for the spring and summer months, this tan wrap belt is a great pick. This belt is one size, but eloquii is a plus-size line so will likely work best for sizes 14 and up. Again, though, it all depends on how you wrap and style it.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for obi belts:

  1. Elizabeth Kelly – Many of my obis hail from this wonderful Etsy vendor. I especially love her obi-like petal wrap belts.
  2. Amazon – Leather and vegan options at a variety of price points.
  3. Nordstrom, Saks, and Bloomies – Each have a small selection available
  4. And, of course, THRIFT STORES! It’ll be hit or miss, for sure, but considering how expensive blazers can get it’s worth a look. (thethriftshopper.com can help you locate stores near you.)

Hi Sal! Any tips for making these obi belts work; I’m kinda short-waisted with big chest, medium waist, small hips?? .

Anneesha, they can be tough! Especially for women with your figure type, and especially if balancing your proportions is a figure flattery priority. I’d say go for slightly thinner wrap belts like the eloquii one or Elizabeth Kelly’s petal belts. They won’t take up as much real estate on your torso.

I like the look of the true-wrap obi belts but I’ve never had any luck making it work for me – like you said, it’s all about how you wrap and tie it and I can’t do it!

Thanks for these! I need to branch out and give it a go. And this reminds me… if you get a chance can you post some just “hold up jeans” belts? I get the cute accessory ones, I mean I understand them, but I just bought a pair of skinnies that WILL NOT STAY UP even though they are really my size. I’d love to see your suggestions. (Also it’s my first pair of skinny jeans, at 34, so if a belt is a bad idea with them would you stop me now please?)

I second the “hold your jeans up” belt.

You bet! Thanks for the request, ladies!

And Norma, go for the skinnies. No age limit on them. ;)

I have been craving obi belts lately! I love your picks- especially the first one. It reminds me of two great style bloggers, both from Canada: Sheila of Ephemera, and Amber of Anvil Butane. Seeing them style their obi belts have left me with a desire to try one myself!

Oh my love! I have got to stop being sick so I can go to work and make money and buy..all of these! Give some new life to the two dresses I’ve been wearing for a year now. (I know that’s sad I only have the 2, don’t remind me.)

I also have one of those obi belts – and I think they make everything looking better! Even if you wrap them around your actually-only-for-home-huge-jumper they make it look gorgeous ;) A must-have according to my opinion.

I own the Luxury Lane obi belts in black and brown, and they are a super good deal for the price. They are comfortable and can define a hidden waistline in a skinny minute (sorry, couldn’t resist).
