I’ve had several color debates with my husband recently, which made me realize just how many color names are stolen from foods. And how imprecise that makes them. I mean, fresh raspberries are often the color of my dress, but anything made from raspberries is the color of my … everything else. (Minus necklace and exposed skin, of course.) Plums and eggplants are very similar colors in real life, but very different colors on fabric. And it’s all further complicated by the fact that no two eyes see the same color in the same way. As someone who loves categorization and naming, this drives me batso.
Have I ever told you that Husband Mike believes he has brown hair and green eyes? The man is a blue-eyed blonde, I’m TELLING you.

Gorgeous dress and color, Sal. And yes, I’ve noticed that fashion colors are often food-related, and sometimes food I don’t know very well. Like starfruit. I do recognize chocolate, caramel and merlot.

I spent many year in the commercial printing business where ink colors are precise. We lived by the Pantone color charts. Standard ink colors are the same from year to year and carry the same catalog number. Custom colors are mixed, by ink weight “recipes” in the Pantone charts. Van Dyke Brown ink was the same color 30 years ago as today and probably will be 30 years from now.
Clothing manufacturers don’t seem to adhere to any such color standards. Speaking of Pantone, apparently they have declared the color of the year for 2013 as emerald. Again, that has a very specific meaning in Pantonese, but I see all sorts of greens and blue-greens being presented in clothing as “emerald”. Does this bother me? Somewhat. It probably wouldn’t if I didn’t have a background in printing and graphic arts.
Food colors? Wow do they vary, both in clothing and in nature. What color comes to mind when I say strawberry? The first thing I think of is a rather bright red. But really, the fruit starts a pale green > white > white with pale pink > darker pink > bright red > and very ripe berries are almost reddish black. At least that’s what goes on in my garden.
What’s a mauve shirt? What’s a taupe shirt? Those are 2 apparently catch-all colors that both have wide variations.
Color is so complex and can be confusing. However, I’ve spent a good part of my life dealing with color in one form or another and I love it.

Yay! You’ll love it, Mary. ASOS generally runs small, though true to their own size charts. However this jacket runs fairly true. I ordered it in size 10 initially, but exchanged for an 8 which fit much better. (I wanted a close fit, though, so if you prefer looser order up!)
Love your blog! Had to laugh at this post. Every time my hubby and I have a conversation that goes something like this- H: “where is my green shirt?” Me: “Which one- teal, lime or forest?” H, sighing: “Nevermind.”- he says that I live in a box of 96 crayons and he lives in a box of 8. It’s so true!
