Insomniac Sale Picks: Casual Cotton Dresses

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Jane requested a few picks for casual, cotton spring/summer dresses, so here we go:

Athleta Doran Dress – was $69, now $34.99

I am a HUGE fan of Athleta’s organic cotton offerings for summer, and own a half dozen of their dresses myself. They’re durable, launder well, and fit beautifully. This pale gray dress could use some bright accessories to perk it up, but the cut will flatter many figures. Available in sizes XXS – XL, as well as a few in tall and petite sizes.

Boden Casual Dress – was $114, now $68

This cotton dress is lined, so it might not work for the dead of summer, but sleeved summer dresses are such a rarity, I just had to include it! Available in this spunky teal in sizes 2 – 18 (sold out in 14). Also available in some sizes in brown cotton and dark denim.

ASOS Midi Summer Dress With Pockets – was $57.30, now $45.66

This 100% cotton frock just screams summer to me. With adorable pockets and crisscross straps in the back, it’s ideal for warm weather weekend wear. ASOS claims it’s a midi, and although it appears to be knee-length on this 5’9″ model, it will hit lower on shorter women. Available in this lovely purple and bright white in sizes 2 – 14.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for casual, cotton spring/summer dresses:

  1. Madewell – Cute and casual is this retailer’s specialty. This dotted dress is a particular favorite.
  2. All Saints – This slightly avant-garde designer does some amazing things with cotton voile. If you’re looking for casual with an edge, check ’em out.
  3. Three Dots – Spendy, yes, but amazing quality. Most offerings are very classic and basic, which can be extremely refreshing!
  4. And, of course, THRIFT STORES! Just check those tags for fiber content. (thethriftshopper.com can help you locate stores near you.)

  • I really like this ASOS dress. It comes in bright green or navy blue and I can’t decide which color I want more!

I’ll vouch for the Athleta Doran dress, I have it in black and I love it!

  • Michelle

These posts are so bad, but so good! I’m buying the Athleta dress, I agree about the fit and quality of their dresses and can’t pass up a good sale. Plus, it’s never that warm where I live so it’s easy to jazz it up with a bright cardigan.

I just wanted to share my funny experience… I clicked through to the All Saints website and saw a dress I liked, and then saw that it was over $600!! After I choked on my coffee I got the giggles. That’s a lotta beans for a dress.

I think I’ll stay with the thrifting option for my summer dresses. LOL.

    • Sal

ZOUNDS. Most of their stuff isn’t quite that spendy!

  • Yan

Love thrifted dresses. It’s my favorite thing to thrift.

I’d love to see suggestions for the bold summer colors in pants. Pants which are not jeans, preferably, more summer weight?

  • Maggie

Hey Sal– I’m really tall (like 6’2), but I am LOVING the classic white jeans look for the spring- could you do a feature on where to find white or colored jeans with long inseams? Thanks, love this feature!

  • Ames

Three dots: almost all minis or above the knee.
All Saints: mostly mini or above the knee. The midi-options are for skinny girls.

Sure would love a post about longer dresses that 1) cover the knee, 2) are still summery and 3) aren’t so fitted around the butt (like the All Saints, many of which are a riff on va-voom form-fitting column dresses with side gathers, i.e. totally unwearable for pear-shaped fat girls).

    • Sal

Not sure if you’re looking for plus sizes, but if not Boden has some longer length summer dresses: http://www.bodenusa.com/

I’ll try your request soon, Ames. I understand that the options in this particular post might not work for you, but that doesn’t mean they won’t work for other readers.

      • Ames

I wasn’t trying to imply they wouldn’t work for other readers! Clearly they work for most women because go to any clothing site, click on dresses, and see almost all above the knee styles (or maxis). Hooray for pretty knees, show them if you got ’em. I don’t. Your insomnia picks are inspired by reader needs, that’s all I was trying to do.
