Insomniac Sale Picks: Full and A-line Skirts

*In this late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Laura requested a few picks for full and a-line skirts, so here we go:

Banana Republic Modern Sleek A Line Skirt – was $79.50,
now $55.65 with code BRSWEET

I just bought this skirt for myself a week or so ago, and it’s uterly lovely. A classic, a-line shape, fully-lined, nice wide waistband, and flattering mid-knee length. Not exactly a thrilling offering in terms of colors or details, but such a fabulous basic. Available in this gray, khaki, and black in sizes 00 to 16, as well as petite and tall versions.

Old Navy Pleated Chiffon Tie Belt Skirt – was $34.94, now $28.99

I hadn’t been inside an actual Old Navy in ages, but popped in a couple of weeks ago and was sorely tempted by this skirt. I’d lose the ribbon tie and replace it with my own belt, of course, but the design is just darling otherwise. It also comes in a yellow/brown stripe and solid black. Black has the greatest size range, XS to XXL. This style is described as below-the-knee.

Pure Collection Full Poplin Skirt – was $108, now $86.40

Laura was actually hoping for some colorful options, but dang, there aren’t many bright full and a-line skirts currently on sale. ESPECIALLY if you want non-miniskirts. But this pleated poplin skirt is another fab classic, and comes in this pale stone and basic black. Available in sizes 2-16. This is an unlined skirt, so best for warm weather wear.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for full and a-line skirts:

  1. Nordstromicon – I’ve been eyeing this Collective Concepts Box Pleated Skirt and this Collective Concepts Pleated Button Front Skirt for myself. SO cute. Also short in the hem, so beware! Nordstrom has more modest offerings, too.
  2. ModCloth – Always a great resource for full and a-line skirts, especially bright, retro-influenced ones.
  3. Topshop – Full, pleated, circle, and loads of other flared skirt styles available.
  4. Anne M. Cramer – Gotta give a shout-out to this local designer! Her Flynn skirt has been wildly popular. It didn’t work for me due to thick elastic in the back of the waistband, but works fabulously for many figures.

Try Chadwicks for bright and full.

  • I was just about to swear off any new skirts, but the Old Navy striped skirt looks so much like me : > Thanks, Sal!

  • Carbon Girl

Definitely try Lands End Canvas. They has a couple great A-line and full skirts on sale online last week. I picked up an orange and a pink one that are fabulous!

Here are 2 requests — I would love to find…
    1) a cute paper bag skirt (like the one you found at Opitz with the tie front)
    2) gray leather wedge boots

  • I search thrift stores for these constantly, and have found several over many, many visits. They have replaced shorts for me in the summer, and I’m starting to wear them with tights more often in winter too.

    • Sal

LisaZ, you lucky duck. I hardly EVER find full and a-line skirts at thrift stores!

  • Roberta

Try Talbots. I recently bought two full skirts in a topaz color and an emerald green, both silk. I think their regular skirts run a little long, so always buy petite. Plus they’re really well made.

Lovely suggestions! These put me in the mood for spring. Any suggestions for pointy toed bright colored flats to go with these?

  • They’re more casual, being soft jersey-knit, but I love Hanes skirts.
This one is shorter and more A-line:

This one is longer and more full:

I have the second one and love it. It’s supposed to be convertible to a strapless dress, but I’ve never worn it that way – I stick to using the foldover as a nice comfy waistband. It looks great, and as someone who’s 5 feet tall and prefers long skirts, it lays perfectly at right around ankle-length on me. For you normal-height-ers, it’s probably more like below-knee to mid-calf depending on how you adjust the waistband.
They both come in a few brights and several neutrals and are very soft, and mine seems to be holding up pretty well so far.

  • Ooh! that Old Navy skirt is pretty awesome. I need to stop by my local store!
