Insomniac Sale Picks: Stylish Briefcases

*In this new late-night feature – which will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week – I’ll gather up three fun items that are currently on sale online and share them with you! I would LOVE suggestions: Stylish wide-width pumps? Classic v-necked sweaters? Chandelier earrings? Petite dress slacks? What would you like to see featured?*

Bee requested a few picks for good quality and stylish briefcases or bags that will fit legal-sized folders, so here we go:

McKleinUSA Lexington Double Compartment Briefcase – was $150, now $93.23

I love the modern, pared-down feel of this bag. This sleek case is 16.5″ x 4.5″ x 11.5″ and comes in black and a carmel brown. It includes two large compartments and a front pocket, heavy brushed hardware, and a padded laptop area. It clocks in at 4.4 pounds, which is fairly light compared to other bags I researched.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Portfolio Computer Case – was $229.95, now $199.95

This case has a slightly more rugged appearance, but still looks sleek and professional. It’s billed as a computer case and can accomodate many laptops, but at 16″ x 14″ x 5.5″ is also large enough for legal briefs. Features a front cell phone pocket, fully lined interior, and an adjustable padded shoulder strap.

Hype Milly Briefcase – was $275, now $137.50

So, definitely more of a “stylish bag that can accomodate legal briefs,” but that was within Bee’s request! This textured leather case has gunmetal hardware, a matching leather strap, and weighs about 4 pounds. It’s 11.75″ x 15.75″ x 3″, and has a single compartment, so is definitely the least roomy of tonight’s three offerings. But oh, so pretty.

Other not-currently-on-sale resources for stylish briefcases:

  1. Nordstromicon – Your source for fancy/designer cases, but also has some of the best-looking vegan options I found.
  2. eBags – This site has an incredible selection of professional-looking bags of all types, and is nearly always running a free shipping offer.
  3. Diaz Bags – My laptop bag is from this Etsy vendor, and draws TONS of compliments. Tons of great handmade briefcases, too.

These bags are gorgeous! Do you have any suggestions for slightly less expensive bags for the full time college student who is working full time to pay for her own wedding budget? (That was a ridiculous run on!) I’ve been looking for a bag that will hold my laptop, textbooks, and every day essentials so I don’t have to haul around multiple bags. The hard thing is… spending $50 on myself feels like a huge splurge. Finding something decent in that price range that’s cute and fits my stuff has been quite challenging!

  • Now this is what I’m talking about!

Love the idea, Sally. I’d be interested in seeing some men’s jewelry make it’s way to this series.

I spent the past week or so searching online for a combination computer bag/carry on bag. I need something a bit more casual, but still want to look professional. I ended up ordering the Dakine Liberty in the black hounds tooth pattern http://www.amazon.com/DAKINE-Liberty-Laptop-Tote-Flourish/dp/B005DC8WUK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326895690&sr=8-1
. I also looked at the Dakine Satchel (too big for my purposes) and the Dakine Valet (whick I like the best, but comments online said it wouldn’t hold my 13″ Macbook). My kids have Dakine bags for their snowboards and they are very durable.

  • I’d love to see a feature on stylish, yet HUGE totes for work.
I prefer a tote to a briefcase, messenger bag, or backpack, but the one I have now (which I thrifted for a mere $10) is disintegrating. I like to carry everything in one bag, and I’m pretty demanding with my list: purse, lunchbag, change of shoes, umbrella, e-reader…sometimes glasses case, scarf, gloves, etc also get shoved in there. My current bag doesn’t have any sort of closure, so I don’t really need one, but I would really love to have a few pockets — preferably with a few of them on the outside of the bag so they are easily accessible.
I know I ask for a lot out of my tote — do you think you can find some options?

Love these choices, Sally! Okay, I’ll add what I’m hunting for: A stylish mom-bag! My 2 boys are elem. school aged and I frequently want to carry 2 water bottles plus snacks like granola bars, cheese sticks, etc. plus my cel phone, wallet, keys, small notepad. I have big old totes that I use for grocery shopping, but they’re too roomy and completely ugly. My husband gifted me a beautiful bag at Christmas, but the straps are cotton and too thin so after an hour at the museum my shoulder was hurting. Can you suggest something sturdy, possibly well-organized, yet stylish? Thanks!

When I was looking for a new legal folder-sized bag to take to court I found a couple of options at Wilson’s Leather (green leather messenger bag on sale no less!) and, surprisingly, a nice leather and fabric shoulder bag from Target. While I use the messenger bag less often because it is so big, the black Target bag (which was a laptop bag with padded sections) has worked wonderfully over the last few years. It zips closed and I’m not afraid of catching it on anything or spilling coffee on it.

One tip: when looking for odd-sized bags, take the thing you want to fit into it with you to the store. It may seem like common sense, but I had to return a bunch of bags because the ones that looked wide enough to carry a legal-sized folder actually weren’t.

Thanks for this post, Sally!! The Kenneth Cole is my favourite!
