Husband Mike and I hit some thrift stores today, so I reached for my tried-and-true shopping outfit: Tunic, leggings, pull-on boots. We both found some fun stuff, but I’m claiming the thrift triumph of the day: Red polka-dotted silk blouse by Equipment. Retails for $200+, I paid $4. Wahooooooo!

Also, here in the states we’re observing Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday today. I’m in the middle of a biography of Dr. King, and though the going is slow due to extreme busyness, I’m finding it simply fascinating. My tribute to MLK from last year can be found here.

  • Very cool look, Sal. You are toting my personal favorite purse of yours!

  • That bag is awesome. Also I was inspired to buy some Frye style knock off boots recently due to your posts. I love them. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the real ones, xd.

  • What a gorgeous blend of purples and blues! Love that long cardigan.

    Sal,
Question for you…I LOVE your outfit today but have a question about the style.
We have a girl here at work who wears similar outfits. She skips the cardigan, just does the tunic, tights, boots.

She has aspirations to be named the director of xxxx, but keeps getting passed over, which is very frustrating for her. The directors here wear dress pants/shirt/tie/coat for the men, and the women wear dressy trousers, blouses, scarves, or sometimes full suits if they’re meeting with customers.

This may seem pretty dressy for today’s environment, but it is what it is.
I have been advising this girl to dress up more.

So….waddya think? Does the above outfit (minus the cardigan), while cute, give the aura of an aspiring director? Not being critical in any way, just trying to help this girl out.

Hey Mel. Hmm, I’m not totally comfortable making that call since I don’t know what kind of company you work for or anything about the environment besides the fact that most of the bosses dress fairly formally. I can imagine that dressing in a way that aligns more with the other directors might help her somewhat, but couldn’t really say if that will be the one move that will help her get promoted. She might consider asking her superiors for some more direct feedback on her performance and/or how she could advance within the company in addition to making any sartorial tweaks. Who knows what could be at work?

A tunic and leggings is, in my mind, a pretty casual outfit choice. I wouldn’t wear that combination if I were interviewing and saved it for Fridays when I worked in an office environment.

      Hope that helps!

  • You scored an Equipment blouse for $4? Hot damn! And I thought I got a bargain when I got a leopard print Equipment blouse at Nordstrom Rack last week for $50. (It’s one that I didn’t buy during their Anniversary Sale when it was $99, and I was kind of bummed to have passed on it…but clearly it was meant to be because the better bargain yet awaited me!) In any case, wow, you win!

This makes me want to go thrifting.
