I rely pretty heavily on my outfit list. That thing REALLY helps me keep lesser-used items in rotation and make use of my whole wardrobe, so I’ve been trying to stick to it as much as possible. But today, I went off script. I really, really wanted to wear the two items I picked up in Chicago over the Thanksgiving weekend.

And that mostly means these boots. They are GLORIOUS. The Chicago Fluevog store sent me a little e-mail saying they’d be offering 10% off all full-priced items all weekend, and I knew I’d cave on these. They are marvelously snug – one of my only pairs of boots that fit right to my calves, and even cinch closed at the top opening. I may sleep with them on tonight. You think I’m kidding.

The sweater was a thrift find that I snapped up for two reasons: It’s Eileen Fisher and it’s PURPLE. I have a dress in this shade that gets a lot of action, so I’m thinking this cardigan will become a favorite, too.

Did you shop at all over the weekend? For yourself or others? How about today for “Cyber Monday”?

I’ve already confessed to you, but I grabbed a nicely priced Prairie Underground Short Cloak hoodie this weekend! There went my “fun money” for awhile!

  • *sigh* Suffering from ‘vog envy!

I was going to totally avoid shopping this weekend, but then I realized that several stores were having great sales on menswear & a certain husband that I know requested clothing as his xmas gift. So I shopped online. And then today, several fabric stores had sales on basic materials that I decided to stock up on. There goes my good intentions…

  • eek

    Those are fabulous boots!

You are so organized to have an outfit list…maybe I will start one for 2012.

  • Eleanorjane

The cardigan looks royal blue on my screen, but nice and cosy either way. 🙂

  • LisaKay

that scarf was the first thing that grabbed my attention…

  • Mar

These boots look fantastic!!! Ahhh!!!!!! Hearing thought that they fit just right for you calves most likely means I can delete them from my wish list. (I have the Clarks Indigo Proctor cognac boot that you also have, and they fit very snug for me)

  • I have a very similar pair of boots and I call them my “zombie-kicking boots”. You cover the Midwest and I’ll get the Southwest and we can be the most fashionable zombie slayers in the future apocalypse.

(Random tangent: Sal, are you a “Walking Dead” girl? After last night’s episode it is apparently all I can focus on…)

    • Sal

I’ve heard GREAT things about it, but am yet to tune in!

    • Val C-MN

      Carolyn,

I saw the episode, watched Talking Dead, re-watched the episode again. It was FANTASTIC. It was interesting the division in the group over Hershel’s moral beliefs and Rick’s trying to compromise for the greater good and then that final few minutes…..WOW….sad, poetic, and showed what a leader has to do when no one else has the willpower to do it. Too bad the next season is months away. If you watched Talking Dead, the producers explain the background of that final reveal.

      Sal,

Love the boots and love that you have your outfit list.

  • Love the sweater and the scarf…this is one of my favorite color combos. I look for Eileen Fisher in every thrift shop I visit and have not had any luck yet..this looks great!

    • Velma

I bought a gorgeous Eileen Fisher boiled wool cardigan at my local Salvation Army–for $4, I believe–and a few months later, passed on a twin set with no apparent wear that was too large for me. They’re out there!

  • Kenzie

I agree with LisaKay, I love the scarf.

I don’t know whether or not this makes you a good or bad influence on me but before I started reading this blog I hadn’t even heard of fluevogs but now I am determined to own a pair someday. A good influence on my style, I’d say…maybe not so much on my wallet XD

  • Susan

The cardigan is royal blue on my screen also. I was amazed to read that it is purple. I CAN see purple in the scarf. Great boots!

  • I love those boots! I have wide-ish calves so they wouldn’t fit but they are gorgeous 🙂

  • Kelly

Fluvogs aren’t generally my style but those boots are GLORIOUS. So tempted to throw some of my birthday and Christmas money thataway. . . .

  • b.

ACCKKKKK, I have been lusting over those boots since they first came out! Sadly, I will never be able to afford them. Please wear them often and take pics so I can live vicariously!

    • Sal

You can borrow them, b.! Stop by anytime!

      • b.

Tempting, yes, as I think we wear the same shoe size…but since I live in Indianapolis, you’re in no danger of it actually happening. 😉 Thanks!

  • I didn’t do any shopping — I will live vicariously through you.

  • Tricia

Hope you enjoyed the cold tgiving weekend here in Chicago! :). Next time you are in town let me know, would love to meet up if you are willing. 🙂

  • Cat

No, I avoided the craziness, but now I’m in shopping withdrawals. I WOULD buy those boots though. It’s a good thing there are no Fluevog stores nearby. For the sake of my budget, I’m pretending I couldn’t find any online either.

  • Katharine

Yow, your calves FIT in Fluevogs? I’ve had both my tall ‘Vogs stretched over 2 inches (sigh). Yes, I shopped. I stalked the solestruck dot com sale till it hit 50% off, and bought a pair of shoes and another of boots that have been on my wishlist for months.

  • Mia

Tia and I went shopping at the Unique Thrift down the street, also in Chicago (but much cheaper than Fluevog, haha)! We snagged a lot of great stuff, and it was really fun to thrift with a friend who’s in it for the long haul. And I did a little bit of online shopping (Old Navy and Anthro sales and a dress on eBay), which means I should probably put myself on a shopping ban for at least the rest of the year. Those boots are phenomenal!

  • I’m with Wendy – I didn’t shop this weekend, but I am loving your new stuff. New boots are so fabulous!

    • Velma

I bought a pair of Frye Jane boots on Black Friday. Love them so much, and they even make the closet smell good!

  • Aaah those boots are gorgeous. I bought one little trinket despite my ban. Otherwise I was a good girl and did not shop on black Friday!

  • oh, man – I totally meant to take advantage of anthro’s holiday sale, but I MISREAD the details!! I thought it was 50% off sale on Sunday, not Friday. waahhh! Oh well, saves me from spending money on things I WANT but do not NEED – and anthro will always come up with something else that I cannot live without 😉

Instead, I did some GOODWILL shopping on Saturday, which was awesome – it was totally quiet there, everyone was off bargain hunting elsewhere, I guess. I found a sweet calvin klein maxi skirt in (of course) khaki. I may dye it or I may wait. I’m going to need something conservative for the MLA convention in January, this might fit the bill perfectly. AND I found the cutest French Connection jacket (sweater jacket? It’s a woven, and lined, but made from a fuzzy sweater-like wool blend), cut in a kimono-esque style, drop shoulders, wide cropped sleeves, and a little tie to nip it in around the waist. Sure, it was in the “fashion focus” section, which I usually avoid, and sure, it was $30, some 5 times what I usually pay for anything at goodwill…but it was perfect – and I figured, with all the money I *didn’t* spend at anthro, I could afford a little goodwill splurge 😉

  • Want a laugh? Your cute sweater looked royal blue to me, too. And there I was thinking I *really like* that olive green/royal blue combo! (Makes sense that it’s purple, though. LOL.)

  • Kari Margot

It makes me happy that we wore nearly identical (although with different brands/tags) outfit today.

@Hayley Yes, they are gorgeous boots! (and I doubt that they’d fit what I call my athletic calves either) But, fear not, there are lots of lovely and similarly designed boots out on the market.

  • I did some minor shopping. I mean, we’re talking about two camis (staples, people! staples!) and a pair of jeans from Old Navy and a couple of sweaters from Gap Outlet. Nothing major.

  • My local store has those boots in red, I think. I hoping my gargantuan size lasts into sale season. Love them on you!

That sweater totally looks cobalt, not purple.

  • LaChina

I’m addicted to this site. I love your outfits and the concept of the “outfit” list!

  • Val C-MN

I didn’t shop on Friday. However, I did buy on Saturday – but it was only cds and dvds. I went to 2 clothing stores but nothing called my name which was good…LOL

  • Cute outfit! I love the boots. I’m more of a “small business Saturday” shopper than a Black Friday shopper. I shopped downtown, which in my city is where all the fun little local shops are and I bought the most beautiful scarf for my step mother for Christmas. It’s silk and cotton woven together, so there’s a very subtle checked look in the fabric, which is the most beautiful clear blue color. The whole thing is trimmed with little bobbles. I’m tempted to keep it for myself.

  • Elin

    Sal,

Am I alone in wondering how you use this outfit list? I could certainly benefit from some rotation and planning.

I *meant* to avoid Black Friday, but my mother retired from Macy’s, meaning that she gets an extra 20% of any of her purchases – even on top of crazy sales. I’m helpless in the face of so many savings! So, I bought some cute Bandolino black boots and a beauiful mod plum tunic. I’m wearing both today!

  • I picked up my first scarf yesterday. I’m going to give it a try at some point 🙂 Your boots are *amazing*. I do not have an outfit list, but I do pick out my outfit ahead of time- which sometimes leads to finding two or three outfits and setting them aside for the week.

  • Those boots are so awesome! And very “you.” I love the pretty color combo you chose to compliment the scarf!

  • you are pretty much wearing my fall/winter staples. leggings, boots, amazing cardigan…check, check, check! love the whole outfit…definitely worth going off list!

  • Carmen

You look fantastic, I love your style. I just bought a Prairie Underground short hoodie based on your pictures (I do realize you have the long kind). Those boots are AWESOME and I am not a Fluevog lover usually.

  • I’d love to have an outfit list, but the task seems too daunting. What’s the best way to get started? Write down basic outfits, or start with the funkier combos that utilize the “closet orphans”? The closest thing I have is that whenever I come up with an outfit that I deem particularly clever, I snap a pic of it with my cell phone.

I have friends who are rabid Fluevog fans. I am a shoe fiend through and through, but for some reason, I just can’t seem to get excited about Fluevogs. They do have some lovely and funky offerings, but for the price, I’d rather spend that kind of money on other brands. May I ask, what makes them so special? Maybe there’s something I’m missing. Maybe I just haven’t found the right pair yet.

This weekend I bought some basics online at Banana Republic and Gap, and stalked the Solestruck sale until it hit 50% off. The pair of Jeffrey Campbells I most coveted slipped through my fingers amidst the site-crashing madness, but I did score my second choice pair.

    • Sal

Anjela, how you start your outfit list is really up to you. If writing down some standby outfits works best, go for it!

      • Thank you for the encouragement, Sal! It’s so easy to forget sometimes that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Last night I started my outfit list, starting simply, based around a few favorite pieces, and I’ll go from there. At the very least, each day I can add the outfit that I’m wearing to the list. I’m excited to put my list together now!

        • Sal

          Rock on, lady!
