Three of the biggest, most popular Minneapolis art fairs all take place on the first weekend of August. That’d be the weekend that concluded yesterday, for those keeping score. I nabbed this belt and another in a different color from Tom Thomas, a vendor who cut it to size right there in his booth. Gotta love THAT.

I might’ve gone on a minor earring-buying rampage, too, though I’m not ready to premiere any pairs just yet. Still learning to balance ear-wear and the new ‘do. Most of my fun and funky pieces of jewelry are necklaces, and now that my ears and associated ear adornments are more visible, I’m wary of over-jewelry-ing myself. So it’s studs for now, bigger ear baubles some other time.

Hey Sal, now that you mention it, I was going to ask if you felt like doing a jewellery wearing special for super short hair wearers like ourselves. Sometimes it feels too much to wear a bold necklace and big earrings at the same time, but obviously some combinations do work, such as classical evening wear etc. I make a lot of my own jewellery so have a large selection of beaded danglies and since I had my pixie cut I am just wearing them anyway whether I think it’s appropriate or not…. I’d like to see what other combinations you can find or come up with too!
    thanks x

This outfit is super pretty! Love the delicate neutral colors and the pleated skirt. This looks great for daytime and to transition into a casual dinner out. I get great inspiration from you.

  • That belt is gorgeous! Every time I loop mine through like you’ve done I think it resembles a sword sheath, which makes me feel empowered somehow. Loving your new, shorter ‘do and am interested in your experiences as you navigate the perfect balance of jewelry.

  • I don’t comment often, but I must compliment the new ‘do! As a short-haired woman myself I may be biased, but it looks FANTASTIC.

  • Gasp! This whole outfit is utterly gorgeous, Sal. I love all the soft neutrals and the gauzy texture of the skirt.

Change is always jarring to me so I wasn’t sure how I liked your new haircut. But seeing this photos, I’m liking it. I’ll accept the change. In fact, I thin it looks fab. Outfit looks great too! Envious of your finds at the art fair – I was too tired to hit any of them. I love cut to fit belts. Sigh.

  • love the vintage skirt! as a short hair wearer i understand the jewelry obsession. i started making mine to save money ๐Ÿ™‚

Great skirt! I can’t wait to see your new ear candy ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Ok so I’m not sure if I’ve said this since I was on vaca last week, but your new do is FANTASTIC! It suits you so well and just brightens your whole face!

This maxi skirt is great on you as well and I love how you belted the top.

I too would love to hear your thoughts on earrings and jewelry with the new do. I also have short hair (though I am thinking of letting it grow some) and almost always wear studs. I’m just too self concious with the dangly earrings now that they would show so much. But my work place is pretty conservative too to that probably has a lot to do with it.

I love this look, especially the long maxi skirt. Also, the hair is growing on me. With the shorter hair, you notice the clothes more, and it puts more focus on your face.

Gotta work up the confidence to cut mine!

  • Don’t be scared. The short hair will look fabulous with statement earrings!

  • That necklace is really pretty, and short haircuts are made for wearing earrings.

After a dreadful day dealing with insurance corporations (say no more?), it was a great pleasure to see this post and your smile and gentle, cool clothing. We await your earring reveals.

  • I. Love. Your. Skirt.

  • Once again – seeing you rock vintage makes my day!

Can’t wait to see you being to explore the earrings/shorter hair arena of your life – with mine shorter, I’m loving bigger and longer/dangly-er earrings, but I’m finding myself neglecting my necklaces as a result – looking for balance.

  • What a beautiful and earthy-romantic outfit, Sally! The belt and jewellery looks great! xxx

I really like that outfit, subtle and elegant with some nice focal points!
On the subject of earrings: I’ve worn my hair very, very short for most of my life, and earrings are my favourite kind of jewelry, but I do mostly buy two kinds of them: teeny tiny studs on the one hand and very large, long and dangling earrings. I use the studs for everyday styles, and they are small enough to be combined with other kinds of jewelry. When I go out in the evening or have an especially bold and daring day, I wear the big dangly ones. They are my statement piece, I often wear combine them with a low neckline or even something strapless to direct the whole attention to them. I seldom wear them along other jewelry pieces. I really love that look – you’re surely attracting attention this way, but that’s not always bad! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Hi Sal!

Love this outfit! I’m a huge fan of patterns and bright colours, but sometimes a light beige skirt and a white tee are all a gal needs. I love the added belt, and this is great for showcasing your awesome necklace.

I wear my hair up a lot in the summer heat, so the whole visible earrings with large necklaces thing is something I deal with a lot. I find that mid-length to short earrings is best if you’re going with a loud, chunky, thick necklace. If the necklace is longer and thinner though, then it seems to work better with longer dangling earrings.

  • Jessica

    You look so, so lovely!!!

  • I am usually not a fan of neutrals, but this is just beautiful. I love how it all flows together and how the beautiful necklace and belt are featured. Really really nice.

Hey folks! Belatedly, yes, I promise to whip up a post about hair and earrings as soon as I can.
