… this marvelous slip.

Vassarette Body Curves Half Slip – $12.99

**UPDATED TO ADD: Hey all. Thanks to some reader feedback in the comments – which you should definitely read – I’m going to advise you to purchase this guy with caution. It definitely works fabulously for me, but so many readers have tried and really struggled with this particular slip, I’m wondering if I just got lucky with a particular fiber run or something. If you decide to try it out, keep your receipt!**

Half-slips have always come equipped with narrow elastic waistbands that INEVITABLY pinch and subdivide one’s tender midsection. And if someone could explain why, I’d be ever so grateful. I have spent years wearing the same miniskirt-length half-slip at various points on my torso because the only other half-slips I can find are miles too long for most of my skirts. And it’s always been a game of “hide the divet” because the waistband on said miniskirt-length half-slip sits comfortably at my natural waist, but squishes my flesh at just about every other point along my body. So I’ve had to position my skirt waistbands and cardigan hems carefully, or look … well, dented.

NO MORE.

See the lacy waistband on that slip? It stretches. Stretches, people! And it is specifically designed to be a choose-your-own-length slip that can be placed high on your torso, or slid down below your navel depending on the length of your hem. Gone are the days of buying a slip at every possible length! Gone are the days of hiking a long slip up to your armpits! Gone are the days of, “hide the divet!”

Other questions I have:

  1. Why didn’t someone think of this before?
  2. Why didn’t I invent this MYSELF?

The version shown here is 18″ long, and mine is 16″. I bought mine at Target, but Target.com has a very limited size and length selection right now. At my brick-and-mortar Target I saw black, tan, and white colorways as well as 14″, 16″ and 18″ length options. So by all means, run out and buy one for yourself. You’ll thank me, I swear.

Well I’m totally picking one of those up soon. I have one full slip that I like and that is it. It is one of the ones that you buy by bra size so its fitted through the top with adjustable straps. Sometimes you just don’t want a full slip though and that one looks great.

I love this post…it is so true what half slips do…I want to get one of these for me and my daughter…I have hated the traditional ones for years and considered them a necessary evil!!

I’m generally a full slip kind of person–I hate clothes that creep up, slip down, twist or require constant adjusting (which describes most half slips). I found this slip a few years ago and bought two–still wearing them. You hardly notice you have it on, that’s how comfortable it is. This is a fairly ‘pedestrian’ fashion article, but hey–undergarments can make or break your day!

Can I ask a follow up question? What would a slip like this accomplish? If the fabric is already thick enough not to be sheer, what does it “do”?

I get Pettipants and need to order some. I get that they keep ones thighs from chafing. But what does a slip like this “do”?

Slips can make skirts and dresses move more easily and sit quieter against your body when you walk, they provide a slippery layer between an unlined skirt and tights which would otherwise stick to each other, and they provide an extra layer of modesty. It’s annoying to have the wind pick up, blow your skirt, and expose your slip … but a bit more alarming when the wind picks up, blows your skirt, and exposes your underwear!

Thanks! I guess a lot of my skirts are lined or longer so I don’t tend to have this problem.

like Sal says, these slips are great for wearing tights, stocking, tall socks, leggings, etc. under a skirt with no clinging/sticking.

also if you wear a garter belt to keep your hose up a slip like this keeps the garters from grabbing at your skirt and from showing through so much. steph

I’ve been using this slip for months now and i LOVE it!! (this coming from a former “no i will absolutely not ever wear a slip they’re to uncomfortable, now where’s the static guard? dresser”) I do believe Macys sells them also, if one cannot be found at Target

Lovely – I have a slip (can’t remember the brand) that has no elastic of any kind on the waistband. It’s totally flat (and weighted on the bottom to provide excellent drape). It cost a bomb but I never regret it. This would actually be fairly easy to make for a beginner sewist. (I’m still trying to rope you in :-) )

tiny junco April 21, 2011 at 9:46 am

what a nice design – and target always has great prices and availability, which is good. (tho why is the hem so ugly?)

sadly ANY type of elastic can/will pinch if the length of the elastic is too short for your figure. an elastic waistband should stay where you want it, but you should be able to easily slide one or two fingers in between the waistband and your waist. and as a rule wider elastic will be less ‘pinchy’ (it has the ‘holding power’ spread out over a greater width so is usually more comfy).

yay half slips! one of the ten items i’d take to a desert island ;) steph

I have one of these and I absolutely love it! It is my favorite slip for all the reasons you mention. I need more of them because I wear the one I have constantly.

Love, Love, Love, Love this! Going to run to Target tomorrow (cooking today) to pick one up. I have desperately needed a slip ever since having my son four years ago, but haven’t found one. It’s a sad state of affairs. No longer, the problem is solved!

Off to Target after work to purchase this!

Question to any out there….Do you where slips once it gets warm out? I always wear a slip with tights/skirts in the winter, but what about in the spring/summer? AND do you wear a slip under all dresses/skirts or just specific fabrics?

Reply

Sal April 21, 2011 at 11:12 am

Unless it’s windy or I have other modesty-related concerns, I generally skip slips in the summer.

And if I’m doing tights, I’ll wear a slip with all unlined skirts. Lined skirts don’t need ‘em!

Trystan April 21, 2011 at 9:04 pm

Actually, I wear *more* slips in summer than in winter — my sundresses & summery skirts tend to be made of lightweight cottons & I feel kind of exposed underneath! Plus, summer skirts/dresses can often be rather full & gathered, so they’re awfully breezy. But I’m old-fashioned. Mom taught me to wear slips, & by golly, I still wear them.

Also, & this is probably filed in Problems Only Goths Have, most of my undies are black, & if I forget & don’t wear one of my rare white or pale pink pairs, but I really want to wear a light-colored skirt/dress, well, a slip hides the problem easily :-)

I wear more slips in the summer too. I think more of my winter skirts are lined though. I did have someone make fun of me and call me old because of my slip wearing though.

I have the Spanx shape wear slip but this one looks a lot more comfy for those days I don’t feel like reining it in (that would be most days).

I bought 2 of these after reading your “Layering without Lumps” post. They’re great! I think mine don’t have lace on the waistbands though.

Decent full and half slips are practically impossible to find from this country. Too bad Target does not ship to Finland – I could definitely use a skin colored one! Maybe I should sew one… …silk jersey and pretty elastic lace, perhaps?

I wear half slips generally everyday unless I am wearing a full slip. I have a lot of half slips some new, some vintage

I have one of these and I am going to be the naysayer. I do not like this slip at all. For me, the waistband always climbs my body; it never stays in place. Yes, there is smooth when I put it on but once I start to move, so does it. This slip drives me bonkers.

I have a few other slips that I much prefer and do not present any divet problems.

Sal April 21, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Interesting! Mine stays put beautifully … hmm …

GingerR April 21, 2011 at 4:31 pm

It’s not my favorite slip either.

The material doesn’t have enough body. If I don’t spray it with cling-free then my skirts and stockings cling to the slip I don’t like that the waistband is so stretchy, it causes the slip to move around on me.

I bought a slip I love at Lord&Taylor that’s more a satin material. It’s heavier and never needs sparying with anti-static stuff.

I know it’s hard to justify spending a lot on a slip but I feel like I get better value when I grit my teeth and pay for better material.

I actually bought this slip nearly a year ago, and it made me miserable. Yes, the waistband was great, but that was the only thing. It actually stuck to my skirts, rode up, and clung to my tights. Awful! I got a great slip at Nordstrom’s and have never looked back.

I like Target a lot, though, but this slip in particular did not work for me.

Miranda April 21, 2011 at 4:53 pm

Help!
I bought this slip for all the reasons you outlined. I excitedly put it on, folded it to length, popped on my sweater dress……

And spent the rest of the day yanking, pulling, reaching up my skirt to refold, scratching at the tag, and otherwise failing at looking effortless. No matter what I did, I could not get this slip to stay folded “to size/length” and stay in place. The one time I did, it created a huge wad-like ring at my mid-section for the 15 minutes it stayed in place. What am I doing wrong?

Reply

Sal April 21, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Holy crap! Clearly, I got some magic version of this slip that works for me, but no one else. Bah!

Miranda, I don’t actually fold the waistband of mine, I just slide the slip up and down keeping the waistband flush to my body. If the waistband is the right size, it should be able to move up and down your torso fairly easily without pinching, but also staying put where you want it. At least, mine does. Sounds like LOADS of ladies have had trouble with this slip. Did you keep your receipt?

Reply

Kate April 21, 2011 at 5:33 pm

You know, I don’t own a slip yet (up until 2 months ago I avoided dresses and skirts like the plague), but I may have to check this one out!

Reply

Sal April 21, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Wow, gang, I REALLY appreciate the feedback on this slip you’ve been giving! Clearly, it is not the magic cure-all I’d hoped it would be. Not sure why mine works and soooo many of yours don’t … I’ve been wearing mine with heavy, winter-weight skirts and dresses thus far. Maybe it’s a weight-of-fabric issue.

Either way, I guess considering everything I’ve heard today, I’d say if you buy, keep your receipt!

Sal, might this slip behave better when one is wearing the elasticated part flush against one’s skin? sometimes those types of elastic with exposed rubber threading at the back require skin contact to work- as in the photo. If so, one would have to position the elastic ABOVE the tights waistline. A singlet or skivvy covering the midriff would have to be worn out and OVER the slip. Do you wear your slip waistband this way? and do you position your slip waistband above or below your tights waistline?

Reply

Sal April 21, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Hmm. I’ve generally worn the waistband over my tights since my tights usually hit above my natural waist. But maybe wearing the slip against bare skin could help it stay put!

Reply

Colleen April 23, 2011 at 6:39 am

I wear slips both above and below the waistband of tights.

Trystan April 21, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Heck, I’ll give it a try bec. a lady can never have too many slips, imnsho. And slips are getting harder to find in stores. I either thrift them or hunt for them in the Dowdy Old Women’s Section of Sears. I haven’t seen this one at Target before, but now that I know it exists, I’ll keep an eye out. An arsenal of slips is essential for all those unlined skirts in the world.

Tiffany April 21, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I bought that same slip from Target for the very reason you’ve highlighted, and it is the ONLY slip I’ve ever not minded wearing. Great choice for a review, more people should know that the comfortable, flattering slip does exist for a low cost.

What a great find! Seriously, the waistline from a slip is one of my biggest pet peeves (on myself…I never really seem to notice it on others). I gotta go check out Target!

I also have this slip. It does tend to migrate upward, but that may be a function of my body shape (waist much smaller than hips). I still like it better than the ones with skinny elastic. I guess for me pinchy is worse than slippery. My new favorite slip trick (stolen from another fasion blog) is to wear a full slip 0VER my under shirt when layering. So it goes longsleeve tee-leggings-then full slip over those-then outer dress. (make sense?). it keeps all of those layers together.

I picked up one of those slips last winter and it has totally changed my winter dressing life! I can’t even tell I’m wearing it when I have it on but it’s a fantastic extra layer.

I also couldn’t live without my Winter Silks slip. It’s warm and feminine and I like to pretend I’m a pioneer lady wearing a petticoat when I wear it, but I’m kinda nuts. :)

In general, I love the trend of lace topped underwear and slips. So slimming!

Rebecca April 22, 2011 at 9:32 am

I generally only buy heavier satin slips, because I feel that the slippery, thinner fabric doesn’t actually hide the bulges much. But I loved the waistband, so I tried this one. I HATE it. The slip either falls down, or the bottom ends up getting bunch up around my waist. It doesn’t do a single thing that a slip should do.

I have this slip, and I like it. These comments confirm that there really is no clothing item that is great on everyone. So when something fails miserably for me, I’ll try to have a good attitude and think, “but this will be perfect for someone else!” as I return it to the rack or toss it in the donate pile.

Colleen April 23, 2011 at 6:10 am

I also bought this slip and did not like it.
My main reason is it just would ride up in the back and be above my skirt a lot (luckily my shirt was not tucked in) but sometimes I tuck my button down shirt into my tights to hold it in and then I was in a constant state of worry the entire day. It seemed way too big too even though it’s the size I should wear. Time to read what others have to say about this.

Karen April 25, 2011 at 1:30 pm

I have been looking for just this – picked it up Saturday and wore it for Easter Sunday and will wear out tonight too. Love it! The lace at the top eliminated the pinching problem with my old slip and it kept my panty lines from showing through the clingy jersey dress….so, worked for me! It did ride up a little over the course of the day, but not enough to be a problem

Lauren April 28, 2011 at 1:18 pm

This cracks me up! I bought that slip in beige and black last October!! I swore by them ALL WINTER to keep my dresses from sticking to tights and everyone thought I was so weird!

For people mentioning static spray: I’ve come up with a great trick. Instead of spraying StaticGuard (or whatever) I put lotion OVER my tights. It leaves some white streaks at first, but you can rub it in and it’s under my skirt anyway. It lasts longer than any spray I’ve ever used and it smells better too!
