It may seem like a strange choice to wear boots and tights on a 70-degree day. But! Today was the first day since fall that I was able to bike commute to work!* And when I arrive at my office, freshen up, get dressed, and sit down in my cube, I am, inevitably, FREEZING. Today was no exception, so I was grateful for the extra – if a bit unseasonable – coverage.

These tights and this cardigan were purchased separately, and the the cardi was actually thrifted, but I’m always amazed by how their patterns seem like reflections of each other.

*Trying not to take it as a sign that I got a flat on the ride home. Trying hard.

  • You know what is cool about this outfit? The color scheme is quite simple, but with all those patterns and textures, it pops and look absolutely gorgeous and fun. It’s amazing how something like patterns and textures can instantly change the dynamic of something.

  • You do neutrals so well, Sal. That sweater looks pretty spiffy on top of that dress.

Hi Sally, what do you normally wear for your bike commute? That is one of the things I struggle with when I think about doing it myself.

  • shannon

Hi Sally! I was wondering about that too…do you bike in your fancy duds or do you pack them along and change when you arrive? I’m in the change-upon-arrival camp right now, but I love the look of stylish folks out pedaling around (just too terrified of ruining good clothes to try it myself!)…

  • LOVE the pattern play here! 🙂

  • I adore that cardigan print. I have to say though – I would have melted in that many layers. Congrats on the warm biking weather!

  • I felt the same way about wearing tights and boots recently, but sometimes a girl’s just gotta be comfortable!

Hey cuties! I am due for an update post on my bike commute routine and tricks, since I got a new bike and some new gear at the end of biking season last year. The old post is here: http://www.alreadypretty.com/2010/05/repost-pimp-my-ride.html

A lot has changed, but bits of that post still hold true. I don’t consider myself a typical style-blogger-bike-commuter because I live in a rough neighborhood and looking boring, invisible, or even a little hobo-like is actually DESIRABLE because it makes me less of a target when I’m riding. I never, ever bike in nice clothes.

Promise to get some photos of the new setup soon, and write up a new post. In the meantime, you can see how thrilled I was with my new ride when I purchased it back in October: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGixY6tmdpc

  • Oh Sal, you look so svelte and sophisticated. I love this look on you – it’s such a surprise to see you without colour. I’m like you – I **feel** the air con so much I always have a cardigan at work – even on a 40 degree day.

Adorable outfit! Would love to see the detail on the dress without the cardi!

  • Mo

    Great sweater!

  • I’m so glad to see that all your snow has melted! Hooray for 70 degree days!

  • – Tessa

No way is the flat a bad sign – it just means you got the bad juu-juu out of the way early in the biking season!!

    • Sal

Yes! THAT’S what I’m gonna tell myself! Love it, Tessa.

Recently discovered your blog and just wanted to say I really enjoy your creative pairings, as well as the fact that you live in a cold climate where you still need to cover up in April (and May). Still have a bit of snow on the ground here in Michigan, so I wore tights and boots today, too!
