Already Pretty Daily Outfit 3/23/11 featuring Diane von Furstenberg dress

Leopard print dress, Diane Von Furstenberg via eBay – More DVF Laetitia dresses
Black opaque tights, SPANX High-waisted Tight-End Tights
Black wedge boots, Kork-Ease Alva
Black necklace, from a flea market in Reykjavik – similar

Last month, while roaming around New York’s Meatpacking District with Peter and Audi, I ducked into the Diane von Furstenberg store to do some research. I was hesitant to believe that her deceptively plain dresses were actually magical, curve-flattering creatures that defied gravity and reality while whispering copious praise into the wearer’s ears, painting her toenails, and balancing her checkbook. It couldn’t be true.

But it was. It WAS true, people.

I tried on this dress and immediately wanted to have sex with myself. And although that meant my cardinal rule of shopping had been invoked, purchasing that dress would’ve maxed out my NYC budget, and I hadn’t hit up the Desigual store yet. So I passed.

But I will make it mine someday. And in the meantime, I might have nabbed this Laetitia dress off eBay for less than half of retail. I’m just saying it’s possible. It’s also possible that the heavy knit silk jersey fabric is warm, sumptuously soft, and rides the line between skimming and hugging curves in the most amazing way. Maybe.

And no, it didn’t snow. Shut up. That’s just … dust. Or something. And if it’s not all gone by Sunday, I’m moving to Argentina.

  • What a fun dress! Don’t worry, I swear spring is on the way! At least, that’s what they tell me…

  • This is such a fun outfit! And that dress is really amazing and beautiful on you. And I can’t blame you for wanting that other dress you linked, it is gorgeous, even if a bit pricey. I would want to have sex with myself in it too.

  • Luísa

oh my god, this picture of you in this lovely dress is the prettiest thing I’ve seen this week. just beautiful!!

  • nicole

May I just say that you look much better than the models in this dress. After seeing how awesome the dress looked, I clicked through the links and was disappointed at how sad DVF’s clothes look on the models especially in comparison to your pic. Congrats on rockin’ this look so hard you put the professionals to shame.

    • Sal

Hahaha, THANKS, lady! It’s funny, but I think DVF really does design for a curvy frame much of the time … I wonder why she uses models with tall, straight figures. They don’t show what the dresses can do on a curvy body at all.

  • Missey

I’m with you on the snow… live in St. Cloud…I think we got 8″.

The dress, by the way, is divine!

    • Sal

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear that, Missey! Maybe we’ll have sunshine by June …

  • Geez, it’s a good thing you didn’t come out of the dressing room and show us how you looked in that DVF dress… that could’ve been awkward!

  • I tried on this dress and immediately wanted to have sex with myself.

This made me laugh out loud!! I’ve always had rules that things must FIT and I must not buy things unless they suit a specific purpose (usually unexciting walkable shoes or basics) or I’m madly in love with them (which means I must feel good in it), but I think at this point I have plenty of clothes and I think I need to raise the bar a little higher to this level. 🙂 And maybe check out a DvF store soon. 🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing you in that dress someday.

BTW, I don’t think I have commented before, but your blog is a joy to me because of your open embrace of COLOR! I really love seeing your outfits every day and also enjoy your thoughtful posts on body image.

    • Sal

Thank you, my dear! I so appreciate your kind words!

  • Oh, that dress is fabulous on you! I can see why you liked the pink one too. That’s not snow, it’s…..crystal sunshine, yeah!

  • Christy

I laughed out loud with this post!! Good stuff, Sal 🙂

Sorry to hear about the snow….we’re getting it here in SoDak, if that makes you feel any better. : /

  • That pattern is fantastic! I love how it’s leopard, but looks almost geometric at the same time.

  • Bubu

Love it! I promised myself a DVF dress when a)my graduate loans were paid off and b) my youngest child was potty trained… both goals have been reached and yet I still can’t bring myself to do it! But maybe trying one on (not just admiring from afar) will change my mind…

    • Sal

eBay is the way, lady. There are some good deals to be had on DVF dresses of all types and sizes!

  • Cute! And thank you for not having sex with yourself that afternoon.

  • Grrrrrrreat leopard print!

  • You look beyond stunning in this dress!

  • Such a gorgeous flattering dress! Totally DVF’s thing- her work is amazing.

  • 1. That dress looks awesome on you. 2. That dress you almost bought it beaaauuttiiifffuuullll. 3. I lol’ed at your description of dress number 2. And 4. Can I come to Argentina with you? I’m getting like 15-20 cm of snow tomorrow. Snow sucks.

  • Sal – I love that dress! I need that dress! Please tell me how the sizes run? I straddle the line between a 4 and a 6. Thoughts?

    • Sal

Doreen, I feel like they run a wee bit small. I take a size 8 dress just about everywhere, and am DEFINITELY a 10 in DVF. All the 8s I’ve tried have been far too clingy.

      • Thanks for the quick reply! I’m going to go search e-bay and snag one. As I’ve said before and I’ll continue to say – your blog rocks and its a daily joy to see your outfits and read your positive missives.

  • Love all sassiness in this post!

  • Loryn

    whoa that dress is hot!

  • Diana

LOVE the DVF dress! I still regret not buying an orange one years ago when I found some at Filene’s basement (so, it was discounted, but still way out of my budget at the time).

  • Dionne

I love your posts, but this one was especially funny.

And this may sound bizarre, but thank you for taking this outside in the snow. I’m a perfumista who reads a bunch of perfume blogs as well as a couple of fashion blogs (yup, you made the cut), and it seems like every second post is “yay! Spring is here, let’s talk about fragrances that smell like flowers and greenery and fresh soil!” I was beginning to wonder if the whole world besides me was frolicing in the tulips.

  • you can melt the snow with that dress (please do!)

  • Adorable !

  • Erin

Dayglo leopard print mini dress? Uh, yes please! I think you’ve got winter on the run with that outfit, girl! Plus it’s silk jersey?!? The comfiest and the drapeyest. Well done!

  • I love this print and those colors on you, Sal, and the fit of that dress is perfection. Seriously, you’re simply gorgeous.

  • This dress is gorgeous! It shows off your curves in the best possible way. Snow, what snow? I see nothing.

  • DVF does run very small. But she is a goddess and her dresses RULE. I have a few contemporary ones and a few vintage. I like the modern ones because of the MAGIC of silk jersey. Warm soft does not wrinkle, manages to cling to the curves and not hang on the fat rolls. I love her I love her dresses, they are magical.
And not to be the person who throws cold water on things. Be careful of DVF on ebay. Know what you are buying because there are a lot of fakes out there. Be careful if the picture is not of the actual dress you are buying, if there are multiple sizes of the one dress, or if it is coming from Hong Kong or Vietnam or Thailand because these are both lovely countries but are also centers of fake designer goods. It sounds odd but on Ebay I think you are much safer buying used stuff than designer unless you have done research and now what you want and what to look for. Know what designs a style was made in, etc.

    • Sal

No, very good points, Patni. Thanks for bringing this up!

  • Oh this dress is so fabulous on you. Not surprised when I saw it was DVF, I adore her prints and silhouettes!

I don’t believe in keeping clothes that no longer fit, but I do have two size 10 DVF wrap dresses waiting for me in my attic when I return to that size. I just COULDN’T get rid of them, if need be I would pass down to my daughter, they are that great! 🙂

  • Kate

    Great dress!

As for Argentina- I just moved to Buenos Aires, and be warned- it’s cooling down, not warming up! 🙂

  • friggin’ KILLER dress

    ape-z.blogspot.com

  • That dress is amazing! It looks beautiful on you too. What I love most about the dress as that it’s a very bold and modern color palette with a wild print. But like you said – when you put it on, the magic happens. You look smashing! Maybe I need to make you a necklace that is black with that shade of green/yellow.
