As you may have guessed, my shopping weakness is shoes. Beautifully designed, unusually colored, elaborately detailed, they all call my name. And when I see a pair that makes me gasp in delight, I IMMEDIATELY begin plotting ways to add them to my collection.
How about you? Is it anything marked down to 60% off or more? Gorgeous lingerie? Scarves? Jewelry? Tights? Coats? Vintage dresses? Handbags? These are a few common ones, but what’s your shopping weakness?

Tights. I have a full drawer of them and I still want them in every new color and pattern I see. (And it’s not like I can really donate the ones that don’t end up getting much wear, so I just hang on to them.)
ALL ACCESSORIES! It is so hard for me to walk out of a store without a scarf or a pair of earrings or a bracelet. Those are my biggest weaknesses. So, what I do sometimes, is just walk around those departments if I am in the store for a particular reason.
I have a weakness for cute little blouses and knit tops with interesting patterns or trim. They tend to be a relatively cheap way to add some variety, and I have way too many of them.
In general I have a weakness for all sewing supplies but if I had to narrow it down I’d have to say patterns. I love the possibilities of a new pattern though I already have plenty that I haven’t used yet. I’m not quite as bad about fabric but pretty close. Lately that has kept me out of clothing stores though bc there are some many things that I want to make and I’d rather spend my money on them.
Zip-up cardigans and luggage.
-HM
Earrings!!! I CANNOT walk past a display of earrings. I probably have enough pairs that I could wear different ones every day for a year. But at least my weakness isn’t all that expensive – usually.
Workout clothes
t-shirts. the cheaper, the better. I’m always like, “oh, it’s sooo cheap!, one more t-shirt in my closet won’t hurt, right? you can never have too many of them”. except that I DO have too many of them now, and also very few formal tops or button down shirts as a result.
I’d have to say anything that’s on sale. It’s very difficult for me to pass up a bargain, especially since I’m used to paying thrift store prices. I can’t fathom spending over $30 for anything except shoes, fancy dresses, and winter coats.
But then, I think dresses are my real kryptonite. Sale items are just a close second.
cardigans. I have far too many…. and mostly in black. It’s a sick thing.
Sundresses, especially ones under 20$. I have to many, but every time I see one I think ‘I can totally afford this!’ And buy another one.
black ballet flats and black tops – I can never have enough
Vintage brooches (of any quality!), fancy bras, excellent “foundational garments” – slips (hard to find for summer, but plentiful in winter), cute tights and hosiery – and, yes, shoes.
I try very hard to exercise restraint, but sometimes my love breaks through!
Shoes, shoes and more shoes. I go through phases of lusting after other things (currently vintage dresses and slips, and I can feel vintage coats on the horizon), but shoes have been my constant, and the higher the better.
Without a doubt, my shopping weakness is vintage. Specifically, vintage sequined tops, though like a magpie I’m attracted to anything sequined and sparkly. I scour thrift stores specifically searching for sequins (though I always end up purchasing much more!) Wearing a sequined top with a pair of jeans or cutoff’s makes me feel glam in a down-to-earth way. And I love the reaction when I’m dressed in sequins at the supermarket or my kid’s school. So fun.
Shoes, especially in the spring, because I am convinced I will find a pair that will allow me to go sockless without getting blisters. Also cardigans – I wear layers every day because you never know if it’s going to be warm or cold in the office. I really can’t resist cardigans at Target because they are cheap and come in all sorts of cute colors and prints.
this is easy – white lace/eyelet/tonal pattern shirts. every spring when the new ones come out i have to restrain myself since 65% of my spring/summer wardrobe are these white shirts. this year i’ve purchase five already, to replace a few of the older ones that have gotten dingy.
Dresses. Specifically wrap dresses. And tank tops because while I love the dresses, there can boob slips. And flip flops! (I live in Florida.)
I am now on the hunt for short sleeve cardis. After working from home for the past 9 years, I’m (hopefully) about to enter an actual office again. Want to make all those dresses more work appropriate, so I’m thinking cardigans can do it.
Jeans. I love all the different washes and how the fabric feels and fits. And bras. I love lacy bright colored ones. I’ve never really been much for shoes because I really need a wide shoe and I find that they are usually hard to find, expensive, or not terribly attractive. Your shoe collection is so enviable tho. It’s so colorful and playful. I just love it!
Scarves! They are only 2-3 dollars at my favorite thrift store. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t let myself look through them anymore, but I think that’s backfired. I found myself coveting a cheap but overpriced scarf in the mall yesterday, so I don’t think I’m cured of my addiction yet.
Before this mall mishap, I had been really good about only buying nice scarves. I’m not a designer snob, but it does make a difference in scarves. I deffinitely reach for my most “expensive” scarves (all thrifted) far more often than the Ann Taylor or no-name ones I initially thrifted!
I have maaaaaaaajor shopping weaknesses too! I love your blog…. been following for a bit. I’m a newbie, so check out MY new shoes that are a total weakness purchase….

Cowboy boots and jeans. I have at least 8 pair of cowboy boots in my closet (that I can think of quickly) and WHO KNOWS how many pairs of jeans! Luckily, I work in a laid back office and can wear boots and jeans every day, so they definitely get good use! I am on the hunt for a pair of stovetop boots right now in some bright color. Probably pink?
Black boots. They are my Waterloo. I buy at least one pair every year, even though NO ONE needs more than 5 pairs of black boots. Sigh.
Designer jeans is mine…oh, and unusual shoes. I don’t buy many, but when I go shopping I usually have to exhibit a great degree of restraint.
Dresses without a doubt. Nothing makes me feel prettier or more put together than a great dress. Plus, one piece means easy dressing in the morning!
I have a list of things that I have been searching for, waiting for the “perfect” one to come along. The perfect vintage leather messenger bag/school satchel. The perfect sterling silver whale necklace. The perfect timeless khaki trench coat. I am constantly searching etsy, ebay, thrift stores, and estate sales for these things and if I find one, I MUST buy it that instant because they are usually vintage and rare and I’ve been looking for them! I’m crossing things off, but I’m also adding to it so I don’t know that I’ll ever get to the “perfect” wardrobe.
Anything quirky and cheap (inexpensive)! I generally avoid shoe stores because I know I can always find something…and it’s not always on sale.
Dresses and skirts that are high waisted and flare out like a swing skirt. I can’t even wear them all yet I never have enough! Oh and maxi skirts and dresses….I’m hoping maybe my waist line will stay the same so I can get some use out of these skirts as I start to get big this fall. It would be nice to not have to buy too many maternity clothes!
Dresses, 100%. I am constantly having to resist the pull of an adorable sundress, or vintage shirtdress, or sweaterdress or… AHH, this is making me want to go shopping!
Shirtdresses. Is that weirdly specific? Not just dresses, but shirtdresses. I almost could never pass by a shirt dress without stopping to think “Ooh, do they have that in my size?”
Beauty products. Conditioners, face scrubs, lotions, perfumes, lip balms… you name it, I go crazy for it. I could spend hours in Sally Beauty Supply (and have!).
I used to be an earring fiend and I now have about five tackle boxes full of earrings. (When I was at my heaviest weight, I knew that earrings always fit and the bigger the earring, the more people would look at them and not my body.) And then all of a sudden, I just didn’t want earrings anymore. It helped that I lost weight and grew out my very short hair (you couldn’t see my ears anymore) but it was almost like I got burnt out.
Now, I’m a cardigan girl. I cannot resist a cardigan: v-necks, scoop necks, crew necks, cotton, knit blend, cashmere, wool, long, cropped, drape-y, streamlined, patterned, neutrals, bright colored. I’d say it’s becoming a problem but they’re SO versatile! For instance, I’m wearing a patterned, scooped neck cardigan that hits right about mid-hip and I’m wearing it buttoned with dress pants for work. I’ve also worn it over maxi dresses, with shorts or little cotton sundresses in the summer.
I do burlesque, so if something sparkles, has glitter, has sequins, or fringe, it MUST BE MINE.
I always think shoes are my weakness but I have such a hard time finding ones that fit and are comfortable AND affordable that I rarely buy them. I have a huge weakness for anything from Target and it doesn’t help that I live 5 minutes from one! My biggest shopping weakness as far as volume would have to be coats. I have so many coats and I always want to buy more because I’m looking for the perfect one!
Shoes of every variety, and motocross or military style jackets. I have 7 such jackets. And like Scary Closet said, black boots (10 pairs).
Tights, Stockings, Leggings, Socks and Hold-Ups!! I have over 300 pairs and never can not buy a pair that I find intresting!!
Shoes and boots are at the top of my current list; I have this delusion that a striking pair of shoes makes an otherwise plain outfit interesting.
For many years, it was earrings and amber and very large rings made of silver. When my hair is shorter, I like to wear one large earring, the stranger the better, balanced by a stud (I don’t like the look of TWO large earrings; I feel as though they completely overwhelm the face, which reminds me, I was watching the extras on How to Train Your Dragon the other day, and my goodness the earrings Cressida Cowell is wearing in her interview segment are something else…) but of late, I haven’t been wearing any jewellery at all. I still do feel the pull when I see a massive silver ring sitting somewhere, though.
Other than that, I am a sucker for anything made out of linen, especially that baggy art-teacher style that’s stereotyped as Eileen Fisher, and to a lesser degree anything made of hefty, delicious-feeling natural fibres. This has been true of me since forever, and recently (as styles shift) I’ve found myself buying near-duplicates of boxy, drapey things I bought in my twenties, loved for years and years, and finally, reluctantly, got rid of in the early 2000s as being either hopelessly worn out or worse than tragically out of style.
Dresses. Especially fun flowy sundresses. I could live in them every day…I mean if it were warm enough and work appropriate.
Much love,
B
definitely anything on great sale, and like others, I tend to buy the same things over and over…
weaknesses I don’t want to get over: pearls, shoes and gorgeous scarves and coats
Cydwoq shoes! I LOVE them all and fun bright or textured tights, drawer one is overflowing and starting to take over drawer two.
Dresses, skirts, shoes, but only if on sale. Now I am short on tops! And online shopping is my downfall…
I would have to say quiet a few things are my weakness like dresses, skirts, pretty impractical tops and shoes.
Quiet a list isn’t it.
I usually can’t walk (or drive) past a thrift store without stopping in for a quick trip around the aisles. In the past few years, I’ve gone from paying full retail on most clothing to never more than ten dollars for a single item and only full price on shoes and underwear.
At first, thrifting was something I did begrudgingly and always out of necessity. But over time, I started to get a little better at it and I realized that not only is thrift store shopping practical, it is also fun! For example, I really wanted to get a new bathing suit this year but I can’t possibly afford the going retail on onepiece suits. So I went to my favorite thrift store and found three (!!) suits, each only $1.99. One still had an $84 price tag on it!
So now, having built a largely recycled wardrobe, I have to practice restraint by not going to the thrift store every week!
I tend to go through phases–shoes then skirts then jewelry, etc, as I identify holes in my wardrobe. In general though, anything with an amazing texture (super soft cotton, rich, thick tweeds, etc) has me looked. Patent leather speak to me. Things with rich details–buckles, bits of embroidery, fun patterns…they call to me. : )
Maxi skirts, especially black ones. I practically buy everyone I can find. Which was fine when they weren’t in style and were hard to find, now it’s becoming a problem…
Neutrals. Anything in khaki, brown, or grey calls my name! Maybe because they look good with my skin tone and “go with everything”,but it’s impossible to have an inspiring, fun wardrobe when it’s full of rainy-day colors!
Shirts, with shoes in a close second. I just love a new top & how it can create several new outfits!
TIGHTS! another one for tights.
Anything under twenty dollars. I also find I’ve collected a ridiculous amount of cardigans. I’m a sucker for cardigans in general, but for some reason I own an abnormal amount of grey ones!
It’s always one specific thing. I’ll see something that I fall in love with and it will nag at my mind until I’m ebaying, hunting for discounts, etc to add it to my closet.
Without a shadow of a doubt, shoes. If I’m in a store that sells shoes and they have a high heel in my size, odds are I will own it before leaving the store. I was at Burlington Coat Factory the other day looking for a red belt and I walked away with 2 new pairs of shoes.
It’s gotten to the point that the bf jokes we’ll have to have two places…one for us to live and one to store my shoes.
I’m also recently obsessed with dresses. I love them, especially shirtdresses.
Skirts, especially knee-length, flared skirts. Probably because they are the only kind of clothes that almost always fit, while shopping for anything else can get really annoying because I’m so tall. Oh, and polka dot dresses (or anything polka dot, really).
We are on the same brain wave! Skirts almost always fit and pants are never long enough.
Shopping the clearance racks that are marked 75% off or higher for all things except shoes unless they are comfy. I can’t seem to walk past one without at least browsing especially when I am feeling down. Though a cheap fix it only adds to more anxiety since in my perfect world I would like to be a minimalist with perfectly organized closet and home and be happy at it. My habit of browsing fashion blogs sure don’t help though since I will like an accessory or an outfit and try to procure similar ones on super clearance – don’t have time to thrift if not I will be there too!! There is also an upside to browsing fashion blogs. I am more choosy as to what I pick up from the clearance racks than when I did the same before such blogs came into vogue.
I agree. The super-clearance racks are very hard to pass up (although they are the source of many things which I love but wouldn’t have or couldn’t have paid full-price to own).
Dresses! I always convince myself that they’re worth it because it’s an entire outfit in itself. I also tend to buy them immediately when I like them because they seem like more of a rarity to me, whereas if I see a blouse or skirt I like, I may buy it but I may wait expecting something similar later. I don’t go for pricey ones, but H&M and thrift stores keep my closet packed. My nicest dresses are a few special vintage ones I have, including my blue tulle 50s prom dress, a mod little white lace 60s mini, and two original flapper dresses from the 20s. Does anyone remember the children’s book The Hundred Dresses? I may have that many…
Red shoes. I have a sad little neglected wardrobe, yet I keep buying red shoes as they will somehow solve the wardrobe issues. No one woman needs seven pairs of red shoes. And I’ve been contemplating Chucks and a pair of boots…
$1.49 tag sale items at Goodwill. I just can’t resist! But I figure that if I even wear it once, it’s still a bargain, right? Sometimes I buy $1.49 items with the intention of donating them. I just can’t pass up good quality, name brand, well made items whether I’m purchasing them for myself or to donate.
Anything orange. It’s my favorite color & it can be difficult to find stuff I want to wear that’s also orange. I scored today with an orange skirt (Lane Bryant) at the thrift store.
Other than that I’d say jackets & other top layers. I recently spent a very pretty penny on a poncho-like garment at an Irish Festival & I plan on adding to my kimono jacket collection at the yearly anime convention.
My shopping weakness is long stretch tanks and camisoles. I have a really long torso, and during the years of cropped shirts, I could never find clothes that fit me correctly. So now when I see long camis, I have to snatch up at least two. They’re great for layering, and I always know I’m covered up no matter what I’m wearing.
Try maternity tank tops & camis. I have a few because I like the color of them but they’re also really long. My fav has lace at the neckline & the hem as well as adjustable straps. I can make sure everything is covered & still have some lace peeking out from the hem of my shirt.
*sigh* Sundresses, especially printed.
I love tops– they are always easy to find, often inexpensive and on sale, and if they have rufffles, embellishment or interesting patterns (I am addicted to patterns) I think they can alter my look. Next is cardigans — I try to buy colours other than black, but this is not always easy, and of course, anything in the colour yellow — my favourite colour, but not always available in the warmer yellow shade I love (not quite canary or ivory, but maybe lighter marigold?). My husband had to remind me the other day when I tried on three tops, that I had a ‘top buying freeze,’ so I didn’t buy any (they didn’t work anyway), and after I find some lighter coloured caridis , I may have to declare a cardi freeze for a while. 14 cardigans is not too man, considering 5 are purely winter cardigans, and the rest are for spring and maybe summer evenings.
My weakness is rings. I will try every single one of them on, often to the annoyance of my friends, in order to find one that fits. I have such large fingers (I prefer a size 10) that it makes it difficult to find one off the rack. When I come across them I snatch them up. At the craft fair there’s a booth that comes through that I make sure I visit before I leave so I can buy one or two silver rings because I know they carry up to a size 15.
Clutches. Especially at vintage or thrift stores. I think I justify buying them because they’re usually cheaper than regular size purses, but I’ll still spend quite a bit on them.
Bags. I am on the never-ending quest for the perfect bag. Some come so close to being perfect, but none are just quite perfect, so I keep buying and buying and buying.
My shopping weakness is the clearance aisle. If it’s under $30, available in my size, and relatively nice looking, I’ve got to have it.
My weaknesses are anything from Old Navy/Gap Outlet/Banana Republic Outlet and whimsical T-shirts in general.
Old Navy/Gap Outlet/Banana Republic Outlet get me because they all carry my size reliably and in a wide variety of items.. Banana Republic, in particular, tends to fit well while also not being styled for a 12-year-old. So then when I’m in the dressing room, I’m taken by the fact that I can find a sophisticated shirt I like that fits me and my wee boobs…so then I pretty much *have* to buy it. Right? Right.
I’ve given up the whimsical T-shirts for the most part over the past two years, because they generally don’t belong in the direction I’ve been trying to take my wardrobe, but I list it as a weakness because I’m *still* tempted to try them on every time I’m in the junior’s department. (Don’t laugh….too hard. I have to shop in that department!)
I think I’m developing new weaknesses for camisoles/tank tops and those lightweight camp shirts with the roll-up sleeves. God, help me.
I was actually just thinking about this, so with my characteristic good timing, posted about it in my tumblr last night: http://everyonehasafashionblog.tumblr.com/post/4220021753/whats-your-shopping-weakness-asks-a-very
I may have a thing for jackets.
Aprons. I have a weakness for fancy aprons – vintage especially. It’s kind of useless, since I so rarely get to actually wear them, but they’re just so pretty. There’s something very appealing and cute about the prints and ruffles and such, and I can’t stand to just wear them to cook!
Shoes. Definitely shoes.
Always looking for the perfect pair of jeans.
Shoes, or ankle boots to be more specific.
Boots. I am now up to 13 pairs and counting.
Shoes. Always shoes, exactly like you. But there are 4 pieces I’ve been looking forever, the pieces that would make me break my shooping clothes moratorium for the next six months if I find them: 1) The perfect pair of jeans, 2) The perfect leopard flats, 3) The perfect leather bomber jacket in caramel, 4) The perfect biker boots with the lenght hitting a few inches below my knees.
This is going to sound weird…but panties. Specifically Victoria’s Secret ones. I have discovered the wonders of boyshorts and hipsters and now I can never go back haha. And I also like almost anything with ruffles. I have a few ruffled tanks already but I always find myself going “ooooh” when I see another one.
My $300 orders from Pinup Girl Clothing (so I can qualify for free international shipping). I am meant to do them once every 3 months, but I can never wait that long!
And little accessories that have been marked down. I always grab them if theyre half price!
I have to admit that mine is sale items.
