Daily Outfit 11/15/10

Ruffle-front blouse, a gift from Missasimilar
Gray mini skirt, thrifted – similar items
Lavender tights, Banana Republic, no longer available – similar (Dahlia Purple color)
Gray suede booties, Nine West, no longer available – similar
Lavender necklace, The Garbage Goose

It snowed a whole bunch this weekend, so I’m back to carrying my shoes to work in my tote bag. I’ve treated these suede booties to be water resistant, but can’t say I relish the thought of tromping through our lumpy, snow-covered backyard in ’em.

I had meant to do this outfit with yellow accents, but my lavender tights just leaped out of the drawer and into my arms. Seriously.

I love those lavender tights AND the booties! Banana Republic has awesome tights, doesn't it?

  • Kat

A note on yellow: wearing yellow tights will make you look like half a Simpsons character. (I know this and wear them anyway.)

  • Sal

Kat: Hahahaha. Awesome. I've got some mustard yellow tights and will have to consider that for their next wearing.

  • WendyB

    Cute shoes!

Oh, I didn't know I needed boots like this! But now I do 😀 Thanks from me! Oh, my wallet says hi and 😛

Love love! Suede booties made me gasp in delight. And I wish I had the chutzpah to wear wild tights. It doesn't work with the image I'm trying to project at work though. Might consider for a weekend though… Hmm

Those tights add the perfect amount of color to your look! Love it 🙂

Cute! I don't think I've commented here before, but I've been reading for months, and I'm learning so much. Thanks!

I do have a question, though–how do you know when it's OK to wear short boots with a skirt? My memory of the TV segment you shared from a couple weeks ago might be fuzzy, but I recall you advising against wearing short boots with some skirts because they cut off the legs at the wrong point. How do you decide when, and when not, to wear short boots?

  • Sal

Leslie M-B: Ahh, yes. No hard and fast rules, here, but booties like these will work best with a shorter skirt. They cut you off at the ankle, so if they're a color that sharply contrasts your skin tone or legwear, that can look odd. And if they're paired with a calf- or below-the-knee length skirt that can make for some short-seeming legs.

Basically, you want to consider your ankles and knees. If you're wearing shoes that disguise the curve of your ankle, your legs will look more shapely if you can show your knees. If you're wearing a skirt that covers the curve of your knees, your legs will look more shapely if you can show your ankles. The idea is to avoid making your legs appear as if they're one unbroken circumference from hip to foot. Does that make sense?

  • Leslie M-B

    Awesome explanation. Thanks so much!

Love the shirt, untucked combo. You look fantastic!

    Very nice and relaxed-looking outfit!
So you wear different shoes for your commute when it's yucky out – any chance you could show them? Or maybe do a post about what you look like on your way to work and then how you transform when you get there? I know you've done a summer bike post, but could you do a fall/winter/early spring one?
I'm a foot commuter who changes shoes at work, tries to fix (curly) hat hair on arrival, etc. and I would love to know your tips! It's hard to look cute at work when I've walked 30 minutes (in minus 30) in the snow to get there.

  • Lucy Starcrest

I agree – skirt length is perfect! Very cute…

  • Kyrstin

    I love the colour combination!
Purple and cream isn't something i've ever worn, but i think i might now!

Marie: Oh lady, I don't think my switchover is really that dramatic! Mostly I just swap out winter boots for indoor shoes – right now I'm using my Sperry Topsider welliess (http://apcontestsgiveaways.blogspot.com/2010/11/sperry-topsider-review-and-giveaway.html). And during the winter I drive to work and spend about 57 seconds per day outside – walking from house to garage, and parking structure to office.

You commute sounds far more challenging, but I definitely envy you the ability to walk to work!
