Feline Interlude: SUSPENDED

by Sally on February 28, 2010 · 32 comments

A couple of months ago, I bought Rowan a hammock. See, Rowan is an Elder Stateskitty at 15 years old and I’ve started to really pamper her. I noticed that she goes out of her way to sit suspended. For instance, if HM and I are watching a movie with a blanket over us, she’ll sit on the blanket BETWEEN our knees. She basically hammocks the blanket herself.

Now, as you fellow cat owners undoubtedly know, cats generally shun anything purchased for them. Why play on that $350 cat jungle gym when there are PAPER BAGS TO SIT IN? So I worried that Ro would completely ignore her hammock.

But luckily …

She sits in it while I’m writing at my desk and scolds me for not paying more attention to her. It’s ADORABLE.

Oh, and I make no apologies for the coating of cathair on the sling. It’s a sign of her love for my gift and I’m not cleaning it off. OK, I’m not cleaning it off yet.

I now christen Rowan Kitty: Mussolini Hammock Kitty.

He looks like a cat with a human face in those pics!

You're a good mom, Sal.

Oh, sweet! Once they're past 10 years old I think it's okay to pamper them. I made my elderly kitties a regal velvet pedestal.

How cute, I love cats, well all animals. But still cats are so full of…spunk. I am glad your gift is being well used. I would be like you…not clean it for a bit.=) Then it would have to get vaccumed off.

How sweet! I'm the same way with my Lola. She's 10 now and gets to do just about anything she wants.

Such adorable pictures! And what a beautiful, beautiful kitty! Funny comment about the cat hair…when there's cat hair on our furniture or clothing, we say its cashmere!!

My Elder Stateskitty does the same thing. I'll be on the look-out for this hammock. BTW, "Elder Statekitty" is so much more dignified than what we call our senior cat. We just call him "The Old Man".

So cute. I do hanker after a Cat but really the apartment and the land lord's are too small for cat owning to be a success.

I did try to persuade my workmates we should get a cat to deal with the rat that's invaded our building (ugh) but my reasoning fell on deaf ears.

Aw jeez! That's the cutest thing I've ever seen!

Aww! I love kitties. My boyfriend & I got a kitten from an animal rescue shelter this fall, and she's the most absurd/insane cat I've ever owned (and I've had cats my whole life). She enjoys playing in the kitchen sink… while the water is running. She sticks her head and paws and back under the running water and gets all wet, and has a blast. Perhaps she missed the memo on how kittens aren't supposed to like getting wet? And that's just the tip of the iceberg! She's a sweetheart, but more than a little crazy.

We did buy her a kitty condo when she was younger, she happily ignores it now. I'm glad that yours likes her bed better!

Sooo sweet! What a beautiful kitty you've got. She looks infinitely happy with her hammock. Gotta spoil them when they get in their old age.

Adorable, YES! She's a beautiful dame and has no doubt earned her pampering a thousand times over…

Haha I love that you can buy hammocks for Cats! Nice to see it's going down a treat!

Your comment on my Burberry post made me chuckle!

She is beautiful. How good of you to do that for her.

Oh this is too cute, way too cute! You are oh-so-right about cats disliking anything you specifically buy for them. Instead of sleeping on a newly bought supersoft kitty bed, our Illusia has been playing with AND sleeping on the new bathroom rug for the past 5 days in a row.

Awww that's so cute!

Traci had this thing about never liking any dog bed. No matter how expensive, she would lay on the ground next to it, and sit her head on it at best. Sometimes she would try to bury things in the beds. She preferred my old comforters folded up and placed on the floor. But about a year ago I got her an arthritic support bed and she LOVES it. As soon as she comes inside so goes for it and pretty much lays on it all night. Glad our animals finally got what they like :)

This is very cute! Here is a similar product that seems to match your aesthetic: http://www.1designperday.com/2010/02/28/cat-hammock-combo-coffee-table-by-case-real/

I wonder why the hammock is more comfortable than a solid surface? & yes, I think every cat thing I've ever bought got ignored in favor of the one blanket or cushion I *didn't* want the cats to sit on. sigh.

I was just gifted with 2 Hepper Waves and my guys are also smitten with the suspension. And they are also covered in the same amount of cat hair. I feel your pain there.

Cute kitty!!! It's great she loves her hammock! Our kitties are quite partial to paper bags.

Love your kitty hammock. That's one lucky and satisfied cat.
My young punk of a cat loves suspension too, and she will shout at the partner (who is the leggy one) to put his feet up on the coffee table so she can sprawl on his legs. He might have to try to DIY one of these.

That is adorable! I'm saving this in my inspiration folder, I'd love to find something similar or even make one myself!

Aw, that's lovely.

My kitty, Othello, is 13 and he is getting OLD very quickly (he was nearly a feral kitten when we got him). It makes me so sad to see him struggle to jump up on the bed. I love the idea of the hammock.

Yes, love them while you can. Their little lives are so fleeting, sigh. *hugs her elderly kittehs*

FYI when elderly kitties get all creaky and stiff, I've found that buying kitty Cosequin capsules (glucosamine, basically) help them a lot! I noticed my old Roscoe was having trouble jumping and getting up, so I started him on a daily dose, mixing the powdery contents of one capsule with baby food. Now he jumps all over the place with gleeful abandon! Seems to help a lot of humans with arthritis too…. ;-) And thanks for the kitty hammock idea! Ro looks sooooo happy!!! I love her expression in these pics…so full of love.
