Lovely Links: January 8

The Brits believe Kate Winslet has the sexiest figure. Which makes me happy.

Have you heard about H&M’s Trashgate? Fashion Herald has the scoop, and some other insider information on the destruction of clothing for economic purposes. Yoiks.

Through the wonders of Twitter, I heard about fab, fab, superfab body image blog Medicinal Marzipan this week. Thanks to the Demoiselles for the tip and yes, let’s all get married.

A DIY on making some kick-ass shredded boots. I need another pair of boots like I need a hole in the head … but I’m still gonna try this.

Why the hell CAN’T we be proud of who we are? And talk openly about it?

More debate over what it means to be a “real woman,” and some incisive commentary on this ongoing battle.

Winona’s Top 5 Tips That Can Be Applied to Shopping and Relationships are brilliant. BRILLIANT, I tell you.

Musing Around takes remixing to the next level.

Commenter Eve introduced me to the concept of The Male Gaze this week. So A) you guys teach me SO MUCH. And B) eeew a little bit.

Karin Jacobson’s new designs for her laser cut leather bracelets
are making me drool. I’ll be giving one away soon!

There really is some laughably bad weight loss advice out there.

And from the Department of Random: My girl Hammie has created an ASTONISHING iPhone app for nonverbal communicators. She designed it for her autistic daughter, Grace, but it’s looking to have much wider applications. Congrats, beautiful Hammie!

    really good links this week!

I think it's really important for any woman who is into fashion to consider the male gaze and how it's built into how we see ourselves. I just wrote a paper about it and had a chance to think the concept through more than I had in the past and sort of untangle the "male" from the "gaze". Sometimes I think we get caught up arguing that we're not dressing for men or whatever and we lose the other important angle to the concept, which is how we're socialized to look at ourselves from outside ourselves in a way that I don't think men are. I think it's really interesting and plays into questions of consumerism and how we shop.

Oh yes, the Jen Hawkins/Marie Claire/REAL women/photoshopping hot mess. I did a piece on that a few days ago… and good lord, the commentary went through the roof, women are really passionate about the debate and that's pretty exciting. I'm doing a follow up about the national average size of women. Body image and self esteem is one hell of a topic.

Kate Winslet DOES totally have a hot bod! I'd SO rather look like her than be a peanut 🙁

  • Alyssa

Thank you for these excellent links! I especially like to see that Kate Winslet has got a rockin' bod as voted by REAL PEOPLE. 😉 Also, I especially like the link to Musing Around… I'm excited to add that blog to my blogroll.

    Thanks for sharing!

Aaaah, if I don't laugh at ludicrous weight loss ideas I would cry. I cannot tell you the number of clients that have asked me "have you read about such and such weight loss plan? Do you think it will work?"

Funnily enough I often use the lovely Kate W as an example of an awesome looking lass (and Marilyn Moneroe of course who I believe was a UK size 16-18).

Thank you for the link to the iPhone app for nonverbal communicators. My 14 y.o. son is autistic and while he has very good communication skills now, he (we) struggled when he was young so I know firsthand how difficult it is to cope with such obstacles. It's wonderful to see new developments for people with disabilities & I'll be sure to pass on the info to others. I'm wishing the pilot program much success!
