Hats Off

by Sal on December 6, 2009 · 42 comments

So I thrifted an AMAZING vintage coat a few months back, and although I already had some fantastic elbow-length gloves to go with it (also thrifted) I knew it was missing something. This amazing coat deserved an equally amazing hat.

So, naturally, I wrote to Audi, Queen of Hats. Initially I thought it would be superawesome to commission a leopard-skin pillbox hat from her, and we agreed to that project. But after mulling it over, Audi said she was worried that I wouldn’t end up wearing something so very dated and impractical, and suggested she use the already-procured leopard-print fabric to make a version of her gorgeous Vanessa asymmetric hat. SUCH a better idea. See?

Husband Mike even got a new chapeau out of the deal! Audi said, “I made the Homburg hat as an experiment with a new block I just got, and when it was done it just looked so very HM …”

It is, hands down, my favorite of HM’s hats. I mean seriously, how handsome is he?

Be sure to check out Audi’s Etsy store for more great hats and fantastic belts by her incredibly talented boyfriend, Mark!

Sal you are ravishing!!! The hat suits you perfectly. And I had to laugh when Audi suggested you tone down your original idea – and opt for "leopard" fur.

And HM – so handsome I can't stand it. You look like a reporter who turns into a superhero to save people in distress.

You two need to take some b/w photos of these ensembles.

Okay, you two are painfully good-looking.

OMgosh you two can wear the heck out of hats. I enjoy your blog so much.

I live in Minneapolis myself. Where are your favorite places to thrift and vintage shop?

That is a great hat but I'm shocked I'm sure that is one of my old coats!! I'll rephrase that – I have source lots of vintage coats and that is one I've dealt in .
Also HM is very old school Film Noir PI in that hat!!

Husband Mike looks fabulously funky and distinguished! I LOVE his hat and his specs are KILLER.

Your hat looks positively delicious too, Sally. I’m digging the subtle animal print and if the trim is at all removable, you could wear it trim-less with super casual outfits too. Have fun wearing your hats!

This is such a timely post, because I was only last night DROOLING over the Vanessa asymmetric in Audi's Etsy shop! Looks fantastic on you! And HM looks absolutely dashing in his new hat, too!

P.S. Hi, my name is Alli! I've been lurking on your blog for the past six months or so. Finally decided to start speaking up! I love you style, love your advice, and look forward to reading your blog every day. I'm from Iowa, so our weather is similar to Minnesota's in many ways, and I find watching your outfits transition from season to season both informative and beautiful. Thanks for all you do!

I know we've exchanged oodles of emails and texts on the subject of these hats already, but I had to stop by and mention how wonderfully gratifying it is to see my creations all done up on two gorgeous people in fab outfits! I'm so glad you're enjoying the hats — they were made with love. :-)

I LOVE this new look. It reminds me of my favorite coat ever. It was a black cashmere number that I found at Frugal Fannie's (wonder if that chain still exists) and I thought it looked like a "little old lady coat" – or "vintage." It was only much later that I realized that it was a mismarked petite and that's why it had those charming shortish sleeves and the mid-calf length. It had the right shape for that look to work, and I cried when it finally became too threadbare to wear anymore.

Can you tell I'm a coat person? And the hat is adorable.
