DIY Cropped Shirts for Layering

by Sal on July 31, 2009 · 17 comments

So my girl Tina of Luphia Loves has opened an online shop stocked with some of the loveliest goodies imaginable. And AGES ago, I fell in love with this dress:

If you are a tiny wee human, you may have this dress. If you are me, you may not. So I became obsessed with recreating it in Sal-size. I mean, how hard could it be, right? Tank dress, cropped and knotted tee. Easy peasy. And then I found some tank dresses on sale at Express! And then I remembered I’d just put a half dozen of these in the giveaway pile!

ARRGH! Clearly, this particular one should’ve been held back. LOOK at those ass-nasty pit stains!

Former workout shirts, oversized, heather gray. PERFECT for cropping. And since I had a half dozen of them, I went a little nutso with the creative cropping. Behold:

Oh, YouTube. Seriously? Monkey face for the screenshot? Oy.

I loved that first one. Wouldn't have thought that it would come out so well, it looked a little flat as a cut up shirt – but then looked fantastic with the dress.

That second one? The asymmetrical one? What about doing that with a slimmer fit tee in a bright pink or yellow? I think it could work.

Love the overall style in the first pic. Dress, knotted shirt, and all!

I can't wait to go try these! I think I might try with some old shirts I have from sports tournaments.

My girlfriends and I used to cut up men's t-shirts in various ways to wear to parties. I have fond memories of all of us getting our hair as big as possible, then donning Hanes t-shirts and having a friend cut it up while we had it on. (Except for the neckband. That was automatically cut off before we even got the shirt on.) Yes I did go to college during the flashdance era. Thanks for the memories. I don't think I'll be doing this trend again, but it looks super cute on you. I like look 1 the best.

I really do love that first one, it looks so fantastic on the dress!! And the second one could work sooo amazingly for autumn like you said, I have mental images of various outfits working through my mind. The shape of the last one was rather interesting too, it lent itself to the tailor's trick of visually slimming the waistline!

Nice!

It would look even more like the original dress (and better) if you trimmed back the T-shirt arms a bit. The original isn't quite a cap sleeve, but it's close. I think ideally those edges should then be finished (sorry, more work!) to look better with the unfinished neckline and hem.

I recently thrifted an awesome early 80's Police concert tee off a dollar rack that would be just plain rad if it weren't for funky pit stains.

I got some Oxyclean to try soaking it but chances are I will need to do some creative cropping to make it wearable.

Your tutorial has made me feel a bit less worried about that possiblity, thanks Sal!
