What's In Your Closet?

How often do you inventory your closet? I'm not talking about full-on, pull-everything-out-and-evaluate. I'm just wondering if you ponder the contents of your wardrobe fairly often, and/or if you have a sense of what's actually IN there. So many of us would sheepishly admit that we've pulled out items we don't remember buying, or brought home new purchases only to be informed by our cohabitants that we already OWN that very thing. It makes a lady wonder if some regularly scheduled closet recon could be beneficial.

AND THEN there's 20/80 Wardrobe Disorder, a concept introduced to me by reader Sharon, who describes it like this:

That's what I call the tendency that I (and most other people I've talked to about it) have to wear the same 20% of my wardrobe 80% of the time. I have a pretty good system in place for weeding out things I don't wear anymore, so I don't have anything that I don't really like or that doesn't fit and flatter, but I still find myself wearing the same things over and over.

I told Sharon that one way I avoid 20/80 Wardrobe Disorder is a pretty constant cycle of shopping, inventory-ing, and weeding. I find that keeping new items flowing in - even if they're just $0.50 thrifted scarves and belts - helps keep me engaged with my own wardrobe. And it makes me think a lot about what I already have. When I consider buying something, I always ponder what I already own that I could wear with it. That means I do a mental inventory of my closet regularly, and a physical one nearly as often. And since things are pretty crowded, I weed nearly as often as I add. (Nearly.)

Do you feel aware of your wardrobe's contents at all times? Suffer from 20/80 Wardrobe Disorder, and think that regular inventories might cure what ails ya? Do you have a sense of what you need more of, and what you have too much of? Got a plan for dealing with those holes and surplusses?

ha! this is funny. i think i am an anomaly in that i only have the 20% i wear over and over again. i can count the number of pairs of pants i own on my two hands, and that probably also could be said for t-shirts, sweaters, skirts, and long-sleeved shirts. my inventorying happens about once a week when it's time to do laundry because literally all of my clothes are dirty.
i recently went through and pulled out everything that i feel crappy in, and that weeded out about half my closet so now i am in rather desperate need of some basics for spring and summer. i could probably actually use some help in the fashion department.

Since I have not many closet space every transition of season I change my clothes in it, placing the ones to the season that comes and puting the others into my "famous" boxes. So doing that I'm inventoring, I think, my wardrobe. (That's why I'm able to do a "shopping season" and stop there)
I'm almost always awear of what I have... well I can't say always, because I can miss some pieces from my memory... I'm getting old you know ;)

This is such a good and calling atention post, beauty.

I admit, my wardrobe is in about the same state that Laura's is, but I still get tempted to wear the same things over and over. I found a GREAT way to deal with it though. I keep my closet sorted by clothing type (short sleeves, long sleeves, pants, skirts, dresses, etc). When I do laundry, the clean clothes to to the left of each section. When I dress, I try to pull from the right. So if there's an item I'm not wearing for some reason, it'll be there on the right hand side staring at me every morning until I find some way to wear it, or realize why I'm not wearing it and get rid of it. Works like a charm, without the hassle of doing a lot of thinking!!!

I am one of those people who has way to much memory, so I could pretty much tell you everything I have, give or take. And I do tend to wear it all fairly frequently, with exceptions. There is the basic stuff that gets worn more often than other things, like certain shoes, or tank tops. And there are others that don't get worn as often, like the shiny of the shoulder zebra print top, but I know that they are there.

I think I'm an exception to the 80/20 rule... I usually know the majority of what my closet holds. I think because I have it pretty organized, mostly by color or type of clothing.

Now, because we just moved two weekends ago, I was able to purge some of those forgotten, back of the closet items & it feels great.

However, now that we're getting into spring, I feel like I need a total wardrobe revamp : )

well, i think i have more of a 50-50disorder, but when shopping i am usually aware of about 80% of the contents of my wardrobe. every now and then i find a piece i had totally forgotten about, but as my wardrobe is rather smallish and certainly not very deep, i basically always know what's in there. still, i am not very capable at filling holes, as those holes usually would be boring basics which i hate to shop...

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not, but my little condo has FIVE closets... While I feel like I know everything I own, I gotta admit that there was some stuff in there I haven't thought about (or worn) in YEARS... However, I just did a major pick-though and dropped off a trunk full at Salvation Army and Arc's. I tend to buy a lot of statement pieces and then realize I don't have any basics to pair them with, so I've been trying to stock up on solid color skirts and cardigans to wear with all the crazyness!

Starting a style blog has really changed my approach to my closet and gotten rid of the 20/80 disorder. But even before that, I would take inventory and weed things out about twice a year.

My biggest change recently and style bog related: I used to "save" certain nicer items for special occasions and thus rarely wear them, when they were actually some of my favorite pieces. Now I wear those just for day looks, pull out dresses I like to teach in, and after being inspired by E., I now even don heels to the library!

I realized that "saving" really was depriving myself of the pieces that I love and that change in approach has also resulted in me wearing pretty much everything in my closet in full rotation now.

Of course, I love this topic! I think it keys into a major issue with most women..."I have nothing to wear but my closet is full of clothes!"

I'm pretty regular about weeding things out. I didn't used to be, though. I was one of those people that had tops from junior high when I moved away for grad school. But now I've taken to doing a pretty major inventory at each seasonal change in the year and donating what I don't wear anymore. And you are SO right; a constant influx of items keeps you thinking critically about the state of your closet/wardrobe/possessions.

I absolutely am a sufferer of 20/80 syndrome, but only to a certain extent. My organizational/ocd side kicks in with some things. So with my jeans, for example, I wear each pair once, in order, until I have worn them all, and then I start again at the beginning, until laundry day. Trust me, I know how weird it is, but it's kind of like a mini challenge each day because I have to pair my tops with that specific pair of jeans whose day it is.

My biggest 20/80 quicksand is shoes. I have A. LOT. of them, but only wear a few.

Sal, I love your topics and the way you get all of us to think so much about all the different aspects of our (already) beauty.

I did a major weeding last fall when I was getting out winter clothes, and I think I'll probably do it every year now. Each time I get a new season of stuff out of storage, I'll weed it.

Other than that, I try to keep things as visible as possible. I have drawers, but prefer to use a hanging sweater organizer in my closet- even for T-shirts. It means that every time I open the closet door, I see exactly what my options are. It keeps almost everything in rotation :)

Another great post, Sal!

Oh I do get stuck in the 20/80 trap every once in a while, but like you, I like going through my closet on a pretty regular basis. The more I get to know my style, the better my closet works. I don't have pieces in it that only look good on "skinny days" or in dim lighting or when I'm at the beach (I live 5 hours from one). Your blog and my sister are definitely inspiration to keep the closet more me and more sane ;) Thanks, Sal!

I think I can actually name every single piece in my wardrobe! I suppose I have an oddly small amount of clothing for a fashion blogger, but I always make sure that I wear everything I have often. I try to cycle through all my clothes so that nothing is forgotten about at the back. I always take time in considering a purchase, so I have time to evaluate it against every other piece I own. I do my weeding outs once a month, although for the most parts it is just putting my wardrobe in order, as opposed to chucking lots of things away.

What a FABULOUS image.

I think that since recently coming out of a uniform, I am utilising my wardrobe more and more. There will always be items which I don't feel that comfortable with and can only wear on super-comfortable days, or rather impractical items which are only suited to a small number of occasions. Right now I'd say I was in a 50/80 scenario rather than 20/80 which is a bit better, no?

Gosh, I've never been surprised by anything in my closet--I wish I stumbled upon things I forgot I had!

I definitely suffer from the 20/80. Wardrobe remix definitely helps me mix things up!

i'm total 20/80 at times.. but i'll have random 'dress up' nights in my closet where i try to make new outfits.. i need to do that more often

I suffer from 80/20, but I know everything I have in my closet. I'm constantly cleaning it out but there are some things I just can't toss -- nothing to go with it, too expensive to pitch, too recent a purchase...

The problem I have is that I live in a 1920's home and the closets are about the size of my pinkie- so everything is so jammed in that I actually forget what I own!

I'm so glad you posted this! About a year and a half ago, I graduated from college and entered the job force, and then six months later had a huge move to NYC from FL, so that was the last time I "weeded" out my closet of my vast collection of Gap apparel thanks to my 2.5 year stint working for them and a victim of the employee discount, which had me buying stuff that just wasn't my style, or because it was "such a deal". But, I need to go through and figure out what I actually wear again. Now that winter is over, I can look back on my winter pieces and see which ones I never wore (and there's a good bagful I can think of right now off the top of my head). This was just the post to get me motivated!

I get stuck in the 80/20 rut too, mostly because I'd rather press the snooze alarm one more time in the morning than ponder what I want to wear. :P I actually have a pretty good idea of what I own.

I would wear more things in my closet, but I don't think I have things to go with all of them. I have certain pieces I wear all the time because they work with lots of other pieces. Still, I think it is better to look "good" more often, wearing the same clothes all the time, than to look "bad" just to pull out a piece for variety that doesn't work as well in an outfit.

I may not always remember what is actually in my closet, but I DO have a good memory for outfits I have worn. That's how I remember what I did on a certain day. ("Thursday? Oh yeah, that was the day I was wearing my red shirt...") I try to remember which people have seen me in certain outfits so that I can at least try not to wear the same outfit twice in a row in the presence of the same person.

I DID just organize all of my shoes, which has been a BIG help. Previously, I couldn't see them all, but now it only takes a glance to spot a pair that may work. I would love to do the same for my clothes, but right now I don't have the space to pull it off.

Hi Sal-I'm sure you're on about me, as I did do the 20/80 syndrome post awhile ago too, LOL!! Funnily enough, I've a scheduled post out next week about things I evaluated in my wardrobe over the Easter Holidays, but I'll let the post come out for more details!! I've come to the conclusion that I'm a quality over quantity gal and that if I don't truly love an item, I'll always find a reason to let it go! Now on thrifting trips, I do try to hold out for high quality items even if some trips mean I come home empty handed-then I know I've a higher chance of things staying in my wardrobe for the longer term. A great post my dear and I for one am a great advocater for evaluating on a regular basis too!

Hi again-I've got a feeling I'm not the Sharon you were refering to, but its such a spooky coincidence all the same, LOL! There is obviously more than 1 Sharon with 20/80 syndrome!!

Yikes. Yep that is me. It is time for a spring closet clean.

I'm not a great believer in weeding things out if they're good quality and still fit. I have a lot of vintage pieces that are either formal or fragile enough so that literally I only wear them once every few years. I wouldn't part with them though!

This past week I wore a jersey dress that I got in 2002 (I remember where I first wore it). I'd thought of getting rid of it many times because I haven't worn it in at least 4 years but good thing I didn't because I plan to wear it all summer!

Winnie said...

Oh man, I definitely DON'T wear all my wardrobe but have a pretty good idea with what I have in it so I rarely come across anything that I've forgotten about. I definitely do need to take a good look at my wardrobe and sort it out soon though...

I have more like a 10/90 disorder... haha. I've tried several times to break this habit, but I always fall back on a few key pieces.

Anywho, I have lots of time on my hands these days, so a proper closet clean-out is on the top of my to-do list! I'm definitely hoping I find some random things in there.

K.Line said...

I think this is as much about a failure of time and/or imagination as anything else. I have a (fairly) well-edited closet full of things I love and, still I find myself wearing the same, say, 40% of it. Till I finally get a little creative and switch up a bit (replacing the most over worn 10% with a new 10%). Could I be more with it? Sure. But as long as the uniform works, I tend to stick with it till I have a bit of time to throw at the situation.

I do switch summer and winter clothes from one closet to another as the seasons change...

I use only 10% of my wardrobe only because of strict dress-code of my job. Alas, I have only 2 days in week for other 90% of my clothes. I know all my things by shape, colors and even by prices, though all my attempt of shopping ban failed. :)

Definitely a 20/80 closeter. I've been meaning to do a purge for maybe 2 years now. And I porked up a bit after I moved so I have the layers of "used to fit", "kind of fits", and "fits now".

Maybe 6 years ago a friend came over and had me purge my closet with her help. I got rid of all the high school clothes but the ones I wanted for sentimental reasons. She allowed me to keep one box of sentimental clothes and one of "that might fit again, really" clothes, and everything else that didn't fit or make me feel fabulous was tossed or donated.

It felt so WONDERFUL to wake up to a closet and just grab anything. I didn't have to do the "oh, this doesn't look so good today" and start out my day feeling negative because nothing fit right. (Well, of course it didn't, it lost any structural integrity 6 years before.) Anyhow, I do need to get back to that.

I find I have several intermixed wardrobes - the work "uniform", casual wear outside of work (strong overlap with work which can get annoying and send me shopping), date clothes (more likely to show off the tat between the girls), and special occasion dress up.

The special occasion dress up clothes get worn almost never. The rest of it is in a pretty good rotation because I hate doing laundry - although it's much easier now with in unit laundry than hauling it down 3.5 flights of stairs and conjuring quarters that I don't hate it as much. But the part that doesn't get rotated is the "only kind of fits and I plan to start exercising tomorrow so I should keep it" stuff.

So. Serious closet purge needed. If someone wants to help, I can offer space on my couch in SoCal...
