Fabulous, Dahling

Walking through Hayes Valley after a belt-busting Italian dinner with Audi and Mark a few weeks back, we passed by a bar that hosted a long-running drag show. It was dark inside, but laughter and music and the sounds of clinking barware floated out to greet us. And then as we walked toward Audi's car, we saw two queens - dressed to the NINES, mind you - attempting to extract themselves from their tiny parked car. Clearly, they were bound for the bar. The one who got out first had on a gorgeous wig and seriously enviable 50s frock complete with petticoat and heels. She sauntered in our direction and when she was a few feet away, sang out, "Hello, kids!"

And I squealed out an enthusastic, "Hiyeeee!"

Because, you see, I think drag queens are fabulous. I think drag queens know how to be fabulous in a way that many other humans do not. And I am not talking about regular, run-of-the-mill fabulous - as in "That tomato soup was fabulous, " or, "Wouldn't it be fabulous if this scratch-off lotto ticket won me $15?" or, "What a fabulous home-buying seminar this has been." I am talking about FAAAAAHHHHBULOUS, DAHLING.

But what the hell does that mean?

I hadn't given it much thought until recently. It was just something I knew and accepted, but left undefined. Yet that tiny little exchange with the gorgeous queen in Hayes Valley made me wonder ... what IS fabulous? Why do drag queens have it? Who else has it? And how can I get me some more of it?

I'm pretty sure that fabulous is equal parts cheese, bravery, confidence, and sequins. That drag queens have hit upon that magical equation, pulling in elements of outrageous fashion, outright brashness, and goofy fun to create a genre of dressing unparalleled in fabulosity. In mulling this over, I realized that many glam rockers are clued in as well, and pull off super-theatrical, flashy-crazy looks with enviable abandon. And while there's loads of fabulous to be had on the runways each season, the models seem to take much of it for granted ... whereas the queens and rockers of the world own it, nurture it, and have FUN with it.

But what can we non-queens and non-glam-rockers do to inject a little fabulousness into our lives and our stylings?

1. Wear shiny stuff: Sequins, rhinestones, satin, metallics, studs, latex ... even glitter nail polish, high-shine lip gloss, and shimmery eye shadow. If it shines, it's GOOD.

2. Watch your posture: Queens walk tall and it broadcasts their confidence. You do the same!

3. Exaggerate: As in exaggerate your proportions by cinching in your tiny waist, exaggerate your peepers by drawing on a cat-eye, exaggerate your gorgeous hair by teasing it up into a quasi-beehive, exaggerate your cleavage by dusting a bit of glitter between the girls.

4. SMILE: 'Nuff said. (OK, OK, glam rockers may scowl ... but I maintain that the easiest way to broadcast confidence and inner-awesomeness is with a toothy grin.)

5. Go bright: Black, white and grey are chic and classic, BUT THEY ARE THE COLORS OF ANTI-FABULOUSNESS. Show us your scarlets and canaries, teals and magentas, break out the violets, emeralds, persimmons, and rich, deep ceruleans.

6. Go bold: Choose hefty accessories, wild prints, statement shoes. Chunky, funky, and fantastic. And give not a moment's thought to whether or not you can pull it off - believe that you can, and you can.

7. Walk sassy: This will mean something different to every single one of you, and that's what makes it so awesome. Throw those shoulders back, or swing those hips, or simply tilt your chin skyward. Add a little sass to your stride and you'll feel fab in no time.

Only one of these things at a time needs be employed to tap into the world of fabulousity. Simple awareness of the cheese-bravery-confidence-sequin formula will allow it to permeate your entire look. The trick is to add a dash of theatricality to your look without going all wigs-and-tap-shoes-and-stage-directions. In my humble opinion, you can feel theatrical without acting theatrical, glitter subtly without painting a lightning bolt across your face, tap the fabulosity without going nuts about it.

And even if drag queen-level sparkle and shine or glam-rocker panache and bravado aren't things we want to emulate on a daily basis, I think that figuring out your own link to fabulousness is a great way to unleash inner stores of confidence, and a truly fun way to push your own sense of style.

What does fabulous mean to YOU? What behaviors and styles, pieces of clothing and types of accessories scream fabulosity to you? How often do you trot out the funky-theatrical side of your own style?

I think Drag Queens are fabulous in the same way Japanese- anythings are. Whether they be Ganguru, or Rockabilly or Sailor Moon; Japanese kids really commit to the look they are working on - in a way that we never do!

As for being fabulous by bringing something on - still havent seen you workin' some serious heels Sal. Remember, WEIGHT back. Give it some wiggle.

Great post. Back in college, the movie Velvet Goldmine made me reinvent my wardrobe. Now I'm more classic/chic than androgenous (sp?). :)

Hammie, you are relentless! I've worn 4" and 4.5" IN PHOTOS. Just because they're not stilettos doesn't mean they're not serious. In my humble opinion. ;)

Sal, it has to be said: I think you're incredible. I love your topics for posts each day! I LOVE this discussion of fabulosity...and I'm glad you picked David Bowie to feature, because to me he just screams "look at me and how fabulously awesome I am!"

Personally, I feel my most faabbb when wearing bright colors and daring cuts (+ some over-the-top makeup for good measure). Plus, knowing you have sexy unmentionables underneath never hurts, confidence-wise! ;)

Excellent post! I've felt the same way about Queens, but also never really thought about why. You nailed it!

I love this post! A couple of my gays call me "the granny tranny" because they think I dress like an old tranny! I think it's a great compliment! You really hit the nail on the sparkly head with this one! I'm all about sequins, big shoes, and COLORS! Now I need to go see the drag show at The Gay 90s again!

Love it! I really want to break out some insane colours now! My way of feeling FABULOUS! is to wear clothing that really flatters and and hugs my curves, ad being totally proud of them. It really takes courage to flaunt pretty awesome curves when most people your age are either fat, or not that curvy.

Ok, Sal, now I KNOW I love you! This is yet another FABULOUS post! I too love Drag Queens. I think your explanation of why they are so fabulous is right on and I love how you have translated that fabulousness into simple tricks for the mere mortal.

I actually am writing on drag and camp in contemporary art so when I pulled up your page today I thought I had bulled up the wrong bookmark!

I think what is implied in you post but not quite spelled out is that Drag Queens perform and perform self -consciously and exaggeratedly. With out getting too theory heavy here, I think what we can take from this is to remember that we are all performing gender, fashion, etc and I think recognizing that and owning it as a performance can give us a freedom to experiment and a confidence to feel comfortable in our own skin even when not in our own clothes! -A

I love me some queens! I recently bought a skirt at Macys and the sales associate said, "I don't know if I should tell you this or not, but a Drag Queen bought this same skirt the other day." I squealed with delight at the thought. I have yet to wear the skirt though for fear I will bump into her on the street and she will put me to shame!!

As for being fabulous - I always feel good when I have on a skirt and heels with a sleeker/hourglass silhouette - like today. One of the gals on Flickr said I had a pinup vibe and that is just downright FABULOUS!!!

I do adore the more outrageous (also knowingly humourous aspect) of drag. It's just pure fun! (NEED MOAR SEQUINS)

Oh I love this post! I couldn't agree more to the point about wearing bright colours, it's a great way to inject a little more fun into the every day!

The fact that you included an image of Bowie automatically makes this post awesome.
For me, fabulous involves wearing an ensemble that you know is going to turn heads everywhere you walk. It's being unafraid to maybe attract a few whistles. And it's being confident enough to wear the most fabulous and outrageous shoes because you love them.

Hooray! I've just discovered this, my new favorite blog (alas, I have yet to discover my style- I will have to write you sometime). I had to comment because I have a small practice around the corner from the very Hayes Valley drag bar you're writing about. I love Marlena's and the Drag queens are absolutely fabulous. I think it's the fearlessness, the over-the-top pleasure in just having fun with a look. As a v-necks and jeans kind of gal it is completely foreign to me. But so fun to watch.

This is such an awesome pre-Friday post, Sal! It makes me want to jump up and down - and then run out and find something shiny to wear! I wish you could've come to our Inman Park Fest last weekend- there was no shortage of awesome drag fashion going on. In Atlanta we most certainly embrace our queens- the more sequins and panache, the better!

Fabulous, to me, is much more about personality than looks. There's a certain, performance art quality that some people have - a kind of vivaciousness - that defines fabulous. And confidence is de rigeur!

A. already said a lot of what I'd say (and much more eloquently than I would have, I'm sure) so no need for a long comment here.

But I do want to chime in and say that I, too, love this post and love drag queens! I saw my first live shows this past year with A. and some friends and loved the live performances so much!! Some of the best fun I've had, and I wish I had some of that fabulousness.

But I will try to apply your numbers 1-7 of advice on how to harness some of that fabulocity for myself! Thanks! ;)

Thank you for that, Sal. I shall memorise your list with all the dedication that I would put into memorising physics formulae and go out and be fabulous.

My friends and I are going to a drag show soon! I think queens are more fabulous than the everyday woman simply because they aren't women. They pay close attention to their walk, their makeup, their hair, and their clothes because it doesn't come naturally. Most women don't pay close attention to their femininity because in part, it does come naturally. I'm aware of the fact that I'm explaining this badly, but maybe I'll write my own post about it.

Drag queens are incredible. They are fabulous because they have so many haters.
If you know that someone's gonna hate on you for what you do, you are going to kick up your heels while you do it.
Women who seek fabulousness a la drag queen should inject that same irreverence into their personalities.

PS- I love your blog, and check it daily!

Sal - are you, by chance, familiar with Tallulah Bankhead? She made "FAHbulous, dahling" famous! Look her up - she WAS fabulous. (... and also something of a queen bitch of the theatre, but you know, sometimes those go together!)

You made me feel fabulous just reading this! I've never been a flashy dresser and until recently never liked to stand out in a crowd. But I'm just about to be 52 - its my time to shine baby :) Thank you for showing me, once again, that I can be loud and proud and thats OK...no matter what anyone else may think. I can absolutely BE ME.

Awesome! Glad you got out on the right side of town in SF. Myself, I just went to vegas with a drag queen :) I use him/her as an excuse to get glammed up too. Plus s/he lends me shoes. I found sparkly pink heels for a christmas gift and they went over well. Don't know if they're fabulous enough for the shoe club but still shiny.

But I especially love drag queens because wherever there's a store that caters to them, I can find thigh high pantyhose that fit.

Yay for bright colours and shiiiiiine!!! Haha, I totally love Glam Rock style, it's so wonderfully fun and full of attitude. And Drag Queens are always fabulous, they have such an amazing confidence, which I love :)

Great blog! I saw you on Delightful blogs.

I totally agree about Drag Queens. They are fabulous! There is a place in town where we go from time to time and there are often drag queens there. The last time there was one dressed like Super Girl and she looked amazing. I was so jealous that I would never be able to carry off that outfit as well and I am a blonde girl! :)

I try to avoid looking like a drag queen generally speaking, but I have certainly got a big streak of high camp in my wardrobe!

I like to think of it as theatricality rather than drag queeny though.
