Already Prettypoll: Why, Thank You

by Sal on February 6, 2009 · 43 comments

IS it better to give than to receive? With compliments, I think it’s a toss-up. Giving inspires visible instant happiness in another person, and receiving reminds you of your own awesomeness in an unexpected, undeniable way. Everyone wins!

On what aspect of your style or physical person do you get the most compliments?

Husband Mike likes to talk about my tiny ankles a lot, but if we’re looking at the general populace? My hair. People just dig the insane mane. I usually get looks of longing and earnest compliments on my tresses from women with that long, heavy, stick-straight hair that I’VE always coveted. (That greener-grass cliche exists for a reason.) However I am always grateful to be reminded that I’m lucky in the locks department!

And yourself? What do potential suitors, fellow women, and total strangers tell you is awesome about yourself?

I like to give compliments, but have had to practice receiving them graciously. In my mother’s culture of origin, compliments could attract the evil eye. It’s not that she actually told us this, but we learned to turn away bad luck by saying something self-deprecating. She used to joke about it a little, but I realized that it was one of those things that got passed down even though it was no longer explicit. So I have been practicing receiving compliments with “Thanks!” intead of muttering something negative.
I think this kind of cultural influence can be very deep and very unconsious.

Momo: WOW. I mean, many of us have trouble accepting compliments because of insecurities, but to have familial and cultural reasons to deflect? You’re awesome for working against that … it must be bloody hard sometimes.

hmm.. definitely a toss up with giving and receiving.. hmm.. as for what compliments i’ve received.. i guess that would be for my skirts!

So true! :) I definitely have a bit of a time of it accepting compliments; I always tend to feel rather self-conscious when people say something nice about my appearance. lol. It’s a toss-up as to what I receive more compliments on: my hair (which is similar to yours; long, thick and wavy) or my tiny waist. The former I get from both men and women quite often, the latter is something that mostly comes from women around my mom’s age. hehe! Now if I could only learn how to properly accept a compliment (though “thank you” always does suffice, I always feel that it lacks the full expression of my feelings. *sigh* lol!)…

I think a mixture of getting & receiving. Receiving a compliments always lifts the spirits!
For me its compliments on the eyes. I've been asked so many weird questions along with that. ie. are those your real lashes? are you wearing contacts? Weird. Yes!
Is complimenting someone on their eyes a cop-out?

I’ve been making a concerted effort lately to give other women compliments on their appearance, as I know it brightens my day when I get one. I tend to stick to mentioning another lady’s fashion choices, as I find mentioning actual parts of their anatomy a little uncomfortable (I’m working on it though!).

As for me, I tend to get complimented the most on my skirt collection and my very blue eyes.

I love to give compliments. I don’t think women compliment each other enough. My favorite compliment to receive however, is when people tell me that I look much taller than I actually am. That, and my legs.

I defintely make an effort to compliment people, even random strangers on the street. However, I’m not very good at accepting compliments.

I have received compliments on my calves, lips, hair and breasts (yes, really…and not just from the husband) before.

i much prefer giving compliments since i’m uncomfortable receiving them. plus, i feel way better about myself when i know i’ve made a positive impact on someone’s day.

Used to get a lot of compliments on my hair, too, but nowadays get more compliments either on my skin or my figure in general. So, not too much to complain about :)

I have to say the hair. It’s long, dark, thick, wavy and nearly down to my tukkus. I’ve had perfect strangers walk up to me at the grocery store and touch it (which makes me totally want to call security.)
I also get comments on my eyes (“do you wear contacts?”) because they’re blue, but I’m actually olive skinned with black hair, so they really stand out.
Other than that, I get the occasional compliment on the huge booty and boobs.

I find it easier to give compliments to receive. I often wonder what someone wants from me when they say something nice. For example, a friend saying, “Why, Sarah, you look gorgeous in that top!”
Me inwardly: “Crap, she needs a babysitter, doesn’t she.”

I always get compliments whenever I wear dresses. As for physical aspects, I get frequent compliments on my hair.

My hair. But also my posture. Somehow I lucked into adopting the habit of good posture when I was in 7th grade and had back pain from slumping in my chair at school. I started sitting up straight – and I guess it just became my general posture. Now people always assume that I’m taller, thinner and more confident than I actually am. It’s better than dieting, self help books or botox. And it’s FREE! More people should try it.

I get complimented on being stylish – which always surprises me (I work hard at dressing well and to my personality, have to, my job depends on it), as I still don’t see my personal style as being anything hugely special or great, and I admire others more than my own.

I decided a while back that I should remember to compliment others more (often I would think a compliment but not say it out loud), and it’s interesting what a positive effect this has on others.

My eyes. Hands down. It is the one good thing that runs in my family. My kid got them and they are gorgeous.

Now the legs in my family?: Not so much, in fact, not at all.

I typically receive compliments for my hair and my smile, often simultaneously. I do get a kick out of people thinking my hair color is natural, though.

I like giving compliments far more – while I do appreciate receiving a compliment and always say “thank you!”, it makes me feel so awkward and uncomfortable!

Hmmh… sometimes people say they like my hair and my eyes… and they describe my style as colorful and extraordinary (even if some don’t like it ^^).

My hair mostly. I am never good at accepting compliments. I do my best to explain why the complimentor is wrong. Not good of me.

It sounds rather contrived, but the joy of giving far outweighs receiving for me. Being that helpful stranger someone met is sometimes the greatest part of my day. I am usually complimented for my hair, which I always find amusing as I am never quite satisfied with how it looks!

I enjoy giving compliments so much more than getting them. Usually when I get a compliment, I find a way to deflect it. BUT I’m working on that. and I actually caught myself genuinely accepting a compliment. So how ’bout that?

I get compliments mostly on my personal style and my ability to shop. I have also received compliments on my eyes/lashes – but I usually mask them with one of the many pairs of big, prescription glasses that I own. I like (and have gotten) compliments on my skin because I work so hard to keep it looking good. I am blesses with nice, Italian, olive-hued skin and I’ve never had any issues with it.

But truly, I am grateful for any and all compliments.

I also get alot of compliment on my hair, more so when I was younger because my hair was super thick then. It has thinned as I’ve gotten older, but it still my biggest draw beside my legs and the obvious bit of junk in the trunk.

Wow…Ok, I agree with a lot of the ladies here, receiving is rather uncomfortable. I like giving, I think it can make someone’s day :)

I get a lot of compliments on the various leggings I wear out. Namely the sequined, shiny blue, and the red and black striped ones.

I’ve been getting lots of compliments on the oddest thing, lately…How I look pregnant. I mean, at this point, the pregnancy’s pretty gosh-darned obvious, but 0I’ve been amused by the number of times I hear from friends and family, “You look so cute pregnant!”

Hmmm. People always like my hair too but to me it’s nothing special just because every Chinese girl has black hair. I always get urges to dye it…but I can’t be asked with roots.

I like giving and receiving compliments both, although I don’t know how to accept them graciously and I’ll usually shrug inarticulately and smile.

Hmm I usually get compliments on what I’m wearing. I also get “You’re very photogenic” a lot. :)

I love giving out compliments, especially to women, who often look shocked, and usually don’t know how to take them (or try to deflect them like many of the commenters have mentioned).

The best response to a compliment is a big smile and a “Thank you!” and I wish more women would do that. Accept that you’re worth it.

I love getting compliments! I get compliments on my shoes (a lot, even from strangers), my jewelry, my hair, my eyes, my smile and my skin (from women). Men compliment my legs and my boobs, haha.

(momo is ur mum Greek by any chance? the evil eye thing is big over here)

i’m for giving and receiving too. otherwise it is exhausting either way.

hm. i’d have thought that people comment mostly on the length of my hair, but during my recent visit to Paris, I was introduced to someone who said “even if I forget your voice or how you look, I will never, ever forget your big brown eyes”. (i’m still blushing, bless, what a sweet think to say!)

People always want to know where I got my clothes, but sometimes I’m not sure they ask in a good way!

Reply

Ky February 6, 2009 at 10:35 pm

The best compliments are when they are for me – not something I bought. For instance, “That’s a pretty dress,” doesn’t mean near as much to me as “You look so pretty in that dress.” I’m making an effort to tell other people the same.

In the past, I have had many people compliment me on my bust. I know it’s on the big side, but it’s rather weird to have people other than really close friends or the boyfriend comment on it.
Other than that, I love getting compliments about my style and I always answer back to them with a big smile and a “thank you”. I also try to compliment other people whenever I see them in something stylish, even if they’re total strangers. I love the thought that my compliment might make someone’s day brighter.

In Zimbabwe, compliments could attract bad luck. I’m still not very good at accepting them. But the thing that complete strangers seem to notice is my eyes. :) (Although they also ask if I’m wearing coloured contacts, which I’m not.)

I get a lot of comments about my clothes or shoes from people that don’t know me, but people that know me well and/or are creepy guys that have never met me always say something about my rack. I wish I were kidding.

I tend to compliment more than I get complimented. When I do get compliments, it’s usually on my red hair, which only looks natural. There is one guy I work with who often comments on my shoes, which I love. I wear a lab coat all day, leaving only the bottom of my jeans and my nonporous, enclosed shoes visible. I make a point of wearing a pair different nonporous enclosed shoes every day, and am flattered he notices my effort.

Hair, clothes, big goofy smile all get me compliments.

Weird ones:

I do tiny sneezes which people think are cute.
My eyebrows.
My ankles (they are not exceptional)
My general smallness of size.

My husband gave me the best and worst compliment of all time the other day. He said “Sometimes you are a truly stunningly beautiful, striking woman. Other times you look just dreadful, really bad.”
