Already Prettypoll: Be Concise

This one is going to BREAK YOU, ladies. MUAH HAHAAAAA!!!!*

Pick a single adjective that describes your personal style.

You are forbidden from using words that mean “varied” such as eclectic, mish-mosh, and multifarious. Also forbidden are words that mean “I don’t know,” such as undefined, evolving, and ever-changing. Try really hard to select that single word that best describes how you conceptualize your wardrobe, your way of pulling together outfits, your way of presenting yourself to the world.

Mine is: Graphic

I’ve recently realized that I like big chunks of bright color, clean lines, and geometric patterns. Very little of my taste tends toward the romantic or frilly (with a few exceptions), and most of what I’m drawn to echoes modern graphic design in one way or another.

OK, now you!

*Wow, that’s two evil laughs in the space of a single week. Could I be on the road to fashion supervillain-dom?

“Apologetic.”
I own nothing that I’m crazy about. I don’t like my body. If I lost my clothes in a fire, I’d probably be happy.
That seems sad. I’m working on finding stuff I like, but when you don’t like your body, it’s hard to find appealing clothing options.

“Reminiscent”. I always try to mix a vintage accessory into my outfits.

Yikes, hard one lol. I’d go with ‘Expressionist’. I always try to convey a certain concept and emotion.

This is hard. I keep wanting to add on descriptors.

Instead I will take a hint from Shakespeare and make my own word.

Bohurban.

Hahaha! Rowena that cracked me up. Way to bend the rules, lady.

That is… if you don’t count the Tweety slippers I’m wearing under my desk right now :)

Simple.

Most of my clothes are monochromatic, I don’t accesorize much, I go for clean lines and I don’t like too many details. I try to keep my wardobe small and buy only what I need.

“Predictable”

I can relate to Sarah R on this one, my years of being a Mom has left me wearing the same items day after day – jeans, tee’s/sweaters and my MBT’s.

Clean.

Even when I’m eccentric, there’s never a jumble of goods–always clean and spare.

This is a tough one.

“Glamorous”.

A friend once described my style as this. I’d agree. I love to curl my hair and wear dresses with big jewelled clips in my hair, 40′s skirts etc. Always wear patterned tights and pumps etc.

Of course – I don’t always look “glamorous” – believe me!!! heheh.

Matchy.

I tend to stick with a main color and match things to it with one or two pops of color. I’m trying to vary things a bit more, though.

PS: I’ve been reading your blog for a little while and totally love it!

Theatrical

I dress for parts. Today I’m a business woman, tonight I might be a prep or a cowgirl or a punk. It makes a cohesive wardrobe difficult because I don’t have room for a huge closet full of clothes.

Lacy December 12, 2008 at 10:54 am

Neoclassical.

I like classically chic pieces and outfits, but I spunk them up with unusual jewelry and accessories.

For instance, a white button down blouse with French cuffs, dark jeans, black pumps and a crazy chunky red necklace. :D

Wow. We are a fantastically varied bunch, we are. I’m SO enjoying hearing these single-word-descriptors of how you lovely ladies conceptualize your own styles.

Vanilla

I don’t like to be too provocative, aggressive, too in-ya-face, to show too much flesh. I like to keep it sweet, warm, cosy and a bit girly. Like a vanilla latte. Now that I think about it, I use a lot of the color cream when I dress. Interesting…

Though I don’t know if anyone would agree.

Earthy.

I adore fall colors and natural fabrics.

Modular.

I like individual pieces that are well made (regardless of price) and will last; I still own clothes from ten years ago that are in good shape and regularly worn. And I tend to go for a monochrome palette in my basic blocks and not much pattern, so that I can continue to reinvent those pieces as my style evolves – from gothy to dykey to artsy to whatever it is now (which is between styles, I think, and the reason I have so much trouble getting dressed right now).

And everything, no matter how fanciful it might look assembled in my outfit, is very practical. I own maybe a half-dozen exceptionally dressed up items that are uncomfortable, or difficult to walk in, unlaunderable, or otherwise inconvenient.

Huh. I am a Swedish bedroom, apparently.

Hairy.

I can’t get away from the cats, especially the one that likes to sit on my shoulders. I wear a lot of grey to match him.

Reply

lisa December 12, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Hmm tough! I’d say “classic” or “whimsical.” I love classic silhouettes and pieces with longevity, but I appreciate a good dose of whimsy in finer details.

conflicted. I want to be hip and cool. I want to be chic and sleek and be a sexy librarian. But I’m conservative and have a hard to fit body. So, I veer between boring and wacky.

A while ago, I was at a party. I think no one had the same idea about the dress code, because there was a guy in a suit and my friends in t-shirts. I was somewhere in the middle. One friend stuck with me all night and when I called him out on it, he said that he felt silly in a t-shirt and wanted to stand by me all night because I always look so classy and he hoped he would look classy if he was next to me.

And I liked that.

So I’ll pick “classy”

This makes my finals look easy. Hmmmm…..refined? I know that that will make no sense to you, but it makes sense to me. Isn’t that what personal style is all about?

Reply

Katie December 12, 2008 at 3:26 pm

“Me”… because that one word covers everything I wear! Sometimes I feel like dressing girly and sometimes I want to pull off the business woman, and sometimes I want to feel romantic, etc.

Sorry if that was cheating… lol!

Reply

drwende December 12, 2008 at 3:59 pm

WallStreetEmoGirl

Okay, I cheated. But I don’t have a word for conveying conservative, corporate, and tailored along with edgy, faintly ironic, and very strongly based around black.

Reply

kpriss December 12, 2008 at 3:59 pm

frizzy.

(yeah, was a tough one, I admit!) So here comes the “legend” – I’m one of those frizzy-haired girls. You know how you try to work your best pony tail ever, you stick every tiny baby hair in place and with the first breeze it just takes off and bam! you have a halo of baby hairs? well, that’s how my clothes go! For unknown reasons, I put everything together, mix’n'match’n'perfect and ten minutes later I’m either splashed with baby food, either passed by my car and got some dirt on… anything can happen! And even when all the clothes are in perfect order, there goes my hair again… frizzy like never before!

I’m done vintage-hunting-and-wearing. I like everything smashing new. A week ago I just received a gift from my wonderful husband – a pair of dark denim jeans just like the new Burberrys – now I’m working on a wardrobe around them! So it’s a halo-pattern I follow whenever I get to clothes. I take one piece, add another, and then something completely surprising to break the rhythm. (like a yellow scarf when you’re wearing purple).

Ooooh there you go, you made me write pages again! ;) indeed fashion-supervillain-dom! :*

First, I must say that this is a brilliant post and I am loving reading the comments. So interesting.

I spent along time of thinking about this. After much consideration I would have to go with “chic”. I so would like to add other adjectives as I see my style as simple, postmodern preppy, classic and tailored. But, if I had to choose one that contained all of those elements I think chic is the closest to the word that inspires my Francophile flavored closet.

Comfortable! I have fibromyalgia, so poorly fitting clothes can actually cause me pain. In the MN extreme climate, I want to be prepared to move from humid heat to icy A/C in the summer, from dry cold to overheated offices in the winter. Whether I’m wearing heels or flats, I want to be able to stride for city blocks without getting blisters. The elastic in socks or tights can’t be too tight. I’m like the proverbial princess and the pea: I’m allergic to wool even though I love it. Some synthetics make me break out in hives. By the end of the day even the most comfortable bra makes me crabby, and those horrible invisible nylon threads they use to sew on tags in shirts stab me in the back of the neck and make CRAZY!

I’d love to say “Classic”, “Glamorous”, “Boho”, or even “Nautical” inspired, amongst other things like “Romantic” or “Rockabilly”, but I’m all of those things, yet none…

Best described, I’m Semi-Business-Casual, if that’s what you want to call it…and I’m ever evolving…

If this counts as a word; I’ll say “puzzled-out”. I feel like my clothes are pieces of a puzzle. I start with one piece that I feel like having on, and then puzzle through which sweater/skirt/accessory/etc will perfectly fit my “intent” of the day. Great post! And I perfectly agree with “graphic” for you!

Ok, this was very hard for me because I’m definitely eclectic and all that – but the word I’m going to go with is “sexy”.

I know that most people probably wouldn’t look at me and get that, but it’s actually a big key to the way I dress for myself.

This question seems to raise lots of comments, although it is a tough one. I´ve been thinking about this for over a day now,and I´m SO ashamed to write it down, but the word is :expensive. I can´t help it but, even without the price tags and the labels,I always seem to pick the most expensive article. This goes with all other stuff too, like furniture, arts, jewels… The above explains that I have a minimalist wardrobe. And that suits me fine.

I like to buy quality pieces that are timeless and beautiful and make me feel awesome. My wardrobe doesn’t always reflect this right now, but it’s what I’m working towards.

Reply

fleur_delicious December 13, 2008 at 6:50 pm

oh wait, I can do it in one now! (yes, I kept thinking about it!)

“librarian”

I think that covers the range of my bookish/menswear and my hippie/earthier looks.

I feel like I should also inform you that my word verification is “mantatte”; I’m envisioning it as a frothy froufy espresso drink for men.

“Untouchable.” I’m trying for slick, cool, and smug, like those women who look like they could wear a white linen suit in 95 degree weather without breaking a sweat; I mostly end up butch, which still doesn’t inspire cuddles.

Wow, you ARE evil…this is a hard one!! I’ve been thinking about it, and I’m going to go with “mimic”. Sounds odd, but I guess it means I’m a copycat! I’m on a search for my own style, so until I find mine, I tend to see looks that others’ do and try and imitate it for myself! Great idea, and hard to come up with just one word!

Reply

Hmmm..

schizophrenic!

I know that may be cheating, but it really is..

Although recently I’ve been leaning more and more towards:

Deceptive

I wear a lot of basics; navy, black, denim etc. It’s only when you look closer that you spy the pointelle fabric in the shape of hearts, or the crazy shoes, or the little gold joker on my necklace, or the smiley face on the bag!
