The lovely ladies over at Cute on the Cheap offered up some scarf tying guides recently, and as a bone-fide scarfaholic, I demanded share-age. As promised, I was sent a bounty of illustrated guides to various knots and bows and wraps and suchlike. Superfun! This website is one of the sources the girls provided, and while there are some really lovely styles illustrated, the instructions aren’t the clearest.
So I thought maybe I’d whip up a video tutorial. Or four. I’ll admit to picking out some of the easier styles, but DANG some of those knots are COMPLEX. Like Boy Scout level complex. Add oddly illustrated and bizarrely described instructions, and I’m just lost. So yeah, these are easy-peasy styles. But hey, this is my first foray into video tutorials, so my fumblings and ramblings and mutterings are bound to give you a giggle. (Sorry about the weird yellowness. No idea what that’s all about.)
And if you’d like to try some of the more difficult knots yourself, demand share-age from the Cute on the Cheap cuties! Drop them an e-mail for two PDFs and several websites worth of scarftastic resources. And then YOU make some video tutorials so I can figure out how to tie the marvelously named Buckaroo Knot. Please.

I’m loving this whole “bloggers do TV” thing!! If only I had the nerve, I might try it. You have done 4 excellent tutorials (I have never tried the butterfly but, as a dedicated scarfaholic from way back, I am so doing it today!!!) What an adorable way you have of presenting yourself and you were so articulate you must do this again. Thanks for showing us a new side of you, Sal. K
There are no words to tell you just how much I love you for putting those videos up!
I just found your blog through Daddy Likey. So glad!!
Thanks for the great tutorials, and all of the other wonderfully wearable fashion tips
Hi Sal-what great tutorials!! I generally wear number 3 on a regular basis in winter with woolie scarfs and pashminas!!
You are so CUTE and WONDERFUL on camera.
One never knows when that How-To Presentations assignment is going to come in handy. These are awesome.
I really loved the videos! Also, very helpful suggestions. I love scarves too, and have been curious how to tie them. The European Loop is the only one I already knew.
Thanks!! Hope to see more videos in the future…;-)
YES!!! I managed to cut off the blood supply to two of my fingers trying to tie a buckaroo yesterday! It didn’t go well. hahaha
Love these videos…I’ve been inspired
Thanks, pretty lady.
I was so excited the other day when you told me you were doing this!
I love these videos (and it’s so fun to watch you do these!
!! I have a rather large stash of scarves I’ve picked up in my travels through thrift shops and such, but I rarely wear them, because I don’t really know how! So now, thanks to you, I have no excuse! lol. Thank you so much for doing these!
I love it when bloggers post videos! I like seeing someone “in action” because it lends so much to their posts when I can imagine them saying it (and yes, I know I haven’t posted any…)
The butterfly knot looks super cool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it! I have a couple scarves but I never wear them for fear of looking “costumey” – which obviously none of you ladies do, it’s just my weird thing.
Great tutorials – such a fab idea and so well executed!
You are too too cute Sal! The camera loves you!
Very fine! That can’t be easy to do–yet you make it look wonderfully natural (and by that I mean professional). Cheers!
awesome idea–really cute/creative ideas!!
ooo, that European loop really got me! And truly complicated as well! You’re a charm! I love my scarves loong (keffyieh style)and consistent, I wrap all that around my neck twice and tuck the ends carelessly so a little fringe shows from underneath all that. (sounds more complicated than the european thing, but it’s kinda the same difficulty level).
It seemed very weird to hear your speaking voice at first, but you are totally charming! I would contemplate doing a video post if I wasn’t afraid that my greek accent would make everything incomprehensible. But you should definitely keep on! Maybe you could do a tour of your wardrobe as a kind of “how to organize our closets” tutorial. Please?
These are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I think you should continue these–I’m so going to try some new ties now after watching you!
OMG you are too adorable! The first one is very similar to a quick release knot- next time I tie my horse up I’ll think of you!
I am fond of the french loop, I figured that one out in high school:) and the name boa constrictor is too good.
Keep it up!
Love it, love it, love it! I make tops that use those types of scarves and I’m always looking for new ways to tie them up.
I also never knew that the way I was wearing my winter scarf was called a European loop. Great stuff
